Ok, so I pulled the chassis and took a look at the circuit by comparison to some photos I found online. It turns out a prior owner made a LOT of modifications to my Prosonic. There are a number of new capacitors here and there, among other changes. So its possible that the mods are responsible for the improvement relative to the Prosonic I tried in November! In any event, I'm very happy with the amp (happy enough that I sold my Super Sonic Twin), so I think I'll leave it alone. But I'm sure curious now to know what tonal changes were accomplished by the change.

Here is a photo for those who may be interested. Note that the chassis is NOT bent. I took a panoramic photo to capture high resolution, and distortion is evident along the straight lines at the edges of the photo.

Whatever was done, I suspect it brightened up the amp and increased headroom. I've read many opinions that Prosonics are dark and lack headroom. My copy is very bright (I run treble very low when using bright speakers like V30s) and I have no trouble getting clean tone at high SPLs on the normal (low gain) mode.

A pre-90s Gibson Special, i.e. the oddball with an alder body instead of mahogany? Cool!

It is an 1990 SG, and I'm pretty sure it has a mahogany body with a maple neck. Whatever it is, its a heck of a player!!

I own an early Prosonic combo. I built a 112 (offset) baffle and stuck a 78 Celestion G12H black back in. Makes the 210s seam like childs play.

In the class A rectifier position i can (depending on the guitar i'm running thru it) from warm CLEAN cleans to GREAT vintage blues break up to BIG Sabbath tones on to Nirvana's Bleach album goodness.
Going onto the class a/b position and adding another external 112 cab (78 Celestion G12-80) it all just gets bigger, warmer and better

Is now my favorite amp. If you come across one grab it!
