What is your favorite amp you ever owned--

I am torn between the 1963 ReIssue Fender Vibroverb (brownface) that I currently own and play through (almost exclusively) and the old 1972 Fender Bassman Ten (silverface, master volume) that was lost in the Second Great Mortgage Payment Guitar and Amplifier Collection Massacre of 2001.

The Vibroverb wins in the sense of having great, great tone, excellent (almost perfect) vibrato/tremolo (whatever), a good reverb tank, portability, and gorgeous brownface/brown tolex/wheat grille cosmetics. It sounds equally great for both guitar and harmonica (both of which I play). It sounds great no matter what guitar I plug into it (my own G&L F100, Stratocaster, Telecaster, G&L Nighthawk and Danelectro DC3, as well as other borrowed axes such as an Epiphone semi-hollow humbucking machine, an old Les Paul Junior and others). It responds well to pedals.

Having said that, I miss that old 72 Bassman Ten. It had an oomph and gutsy tone that I've not heard from many other amps. The only criticism I ever had toward it was the weight (Lord, that thing was heavy) and the lack of a tremolo/vibrato and reverb circuit. It had a cool and funky patina (a real relic--not a relic'd new piece of equipment). It sounded better for guitar than it did for harp, but the harp sounds were still pretty dang good.

So what was your favorite amp you ever owned?

+1! I bought my '63 model from its original owner in 1974 on the advice of Sterling Morrison, a fellow graduate student at the time. He said "the first Velvet Underground album was recorded through one. If you're not going to buy it, tell me where it is and I will!"

I play it nearly every week. What a tone.

But I suddenly have a new main squeeze. I've been downsizing (getting the age when heft is an important factor in new gear), and have been horse trading a bunch of heavy old tube amps (Music Man HD-130 Reverb + 212 cab, Carvin oak cabinet X amp, '63 Ampeg B15N, Hartke 410XL cab, and a two year old Ampeg B100R for a combined weight of 488 lb) for recording gear and a Hartke HA2500/TP115 and the new guy, a Fender Jazzmaster Ultralight head and cab (total 97.1 lb).

The JM is super light (17 lb for the box and 7.6 for the head and it sounds superb. A friend and I A/B'd it with a '67 Super Reverb and they went head-to-head. The only lack was the JM has a digital FX circuit rather than the smooth reverb tank on the Super. Other than that, the Jazzmaster hits a real sweet spot with light weight and great tone. I think that, once word gets around, Fender's going to sell a kajillion of 'em.

The only drawback is that it's pricey -- but it's worth it. As mentioned, it was part of a horse trade, so I ended up paying $250 + tax in cash, and I couldn't be happier.

My Ovation Cat System (circa 1971), 2 channels, distortion (actually fuzz), reverb, tremelo, twin speakers, 250w (100w RMS) and black padded naugahyde covering. Had high-frequency horns that picked up 2-way radio transmissions! Stood about 4 ft high. Sold it to buy a motorcycle.

My first "real" amp: a Bassman head with the 2 X 12 cab -- not much for bass but terrific for the blues/rock leads I was doing back in the late 60s.

But my "been with me forever" sentimental favorite is the Champ 12 I've had since the mid-80s. Love that great muddy distorted tube sound and I even travel with it these days.

Super Reverb I had in the eighties, one of the speakers was playing up so I stupidly traded it for a Red knobbed evil Twin :( :( :(

The 64' Vibroverb Custom is incredible (better be for 2k+), but it needs a 200-300 size room to open it up naturally; w/o pedals. Anything smaller requires an overdrive/distortion pedal. I use a Duncan Twin-Tube, which effectively is a high quality two channel *tube* pre-amp.

The sounds that come out of this amp are pure tone heaven. I can set it on just 3 for the 15" speaker's deep clean Fender tones, & then get awesome, pure tube 2nd & 3rd order harmonics when using the Duncan.

These two are my favorite pair in the 40+ yrs of playin'.

marshall 2555 silver jubilee...... I have a 2550 and its close, but wish I had kept my 2555 back in the day....
other than that my '77 marshall master volume combo is my all time fave...

my fender VK was nice but very one dimensional so both '93's are gone.. my original '65 black face super is also a wonderful amp.

Choice of two really. My current amp is an English Cybertwin and it's awsome, but back in the 1960's I had a Vox AC30 twin and for it's time was the best around.
