I have an opportunity to buy a nice Fender tube amp. I have enough for a Blues Jr. (the NOS). If I thin the herd a bit (and I really should) and sell one of my Strats, I could easily afford a Blues Deluxe. I probably know the answer already, but I am going to get opinions anyway. I don’t gig or have a good area (yet anyway) where I could let the Deluxe really wail, so it’s probably overkill. But, I just can’t help thinking I should do it anyway if I have the chance. Is it bad for the amp to underuse it like this?

Thanks,
Jim

I would not think it will hurt an amp to under use it, I'm in about the same situation. I bought a 65TW RI because I think its the best amp Fender makes but I also own a Blues Jr. for playing around the house. If you can afford it get both, if not get the one that fits your particular situation.

Thanks for the advice, fhopkins. I can't really afford both right now, I wish I could. I am going to be lucky to get one. The Blues Jr. will really be the best fit for me now. But, I don't want to be kicking myself later either.

Thats a problem that most of us have. Good luck with your choice, but you can't go wrong with either.

A tube amp really shines when you crank it 50% - 80% (depending on the amp), where it starts to break-up. Remember that a 25 watt tube is about twice as loud as a solid state.

I have a '59 Bassman Ltd (50 watts), which is wayy too much for playin' around the house, but it still sounds great with the volume at 3. I teach a couple times a week at the local middle school, so when all the kiddos leave, I get to borrow the auditorium for a bit and crank the amp =]

Another thing to have in mind is that you can change out both the preamp tubes and the power tubes to either reduce power or change the tone of the amp. Of course any change of tubes will change the tone of the instrument. I just installed jj 6v6s tubes in my Blues Deluxe RI which has reduced the power quite a bit and made it much more volume friendly at home. You might need a tech to change the power tubes, but you can change out the preamp tubes on your own. Search online and you'll find lots of information and advice concerning how much less the gain/power will be if you switch out a v1 preamp tube, which is a 12ax7 in a Blues Deluxe, for a 12ay7, for instance. Keep in mind that changing the preamp tubes out for lower power tubes will also reduce your gain, ie. your distortion.

Also, do research thoroughly, because there are many amateurs such as myself peddling advice who may or may not know what they are talking about!

Good luck! :D

From my experience I think you'll find that the Blues junior will more than fit the buill for what you want.It will blow a 75 watt solid state amp out of the water without even pushing it. They are great little amps with a ton of sound. You may find on the Deluxe you won't be able to put the volume past 2 without having people complain. I highly recomend the blues junior and I seiously doubt you'll be sorry you got that David with the Goliath sound. Blues juniors (IMHO) are the best tube amp on the market for the muny. Plenty of punch and very dependable. Good Luck
