Hi
Just thinking of buying a second hand Fender Twin Reverb 40th anniversary series ( bought in 2005) , the guy just told me that he realized a broken valve clip while changing the valves for me. He is changing it as well he said but :
What can be the reason of a broken valve clip?
Do you think he has been using it very harsh (dropping it etc) and possibly damaged many other things in the circuit? How wise it is to buy an amp in this state?

If you talk about the tube retainer clip.

This happened sometime, new clip are easy to break. I will buy a amp with broken clip.

But I won't buy a Twin, to powerful and too heavy :(

Thanks for your reply:) Actually due to recent news there are a few broken valve clips. I just dont get how harsh an amp has to be used to get it valve clips broken :/

Twin reverb is one of my dream amps for the genre im playing, (mostly reggae, dub) . But What else could you recommend for similar kind of sharp and clean sound?

You just need to remove tube and you may broke the clip .
What power do you need ?

The Twin Reverb is the king of clean/loud, followed closely by the Super Reverb.

It is not uncommon for those type of clips to break when changing tubes, the clips are rather thin, and 10+ years of heat can make the clips less springy.

Yea I think that makes sense, thanks. so It does not necessarily needs to be droped on the floor for their clips to get broken. What else problems you think an old twin reverb can cause (after its clips and valves has been replaced)?

What category would you put "hot rod deluxe" and "deluxe reverb" in ? :))

Every electrolytic cap should be replaced by Sprague Atom's or F&T's and the idle bias adjusted for optimum performance.

The Hot Rod Deluxe I regard as a crap-shoot. Not sufficiently reliable for serious professional use, ie: a toy.

The Deluxe Reverb is a fine amp and a sensible alternative to a Twin Reverb but nowhere near as loud or clean.

I don't agree on a 2005 amp. Unless they test bad of course

Filter caps certainly can go bad, and I replace lots of them, but I don't consider it a "must," especially on amps from the eighties or newer.

I see older clips are tough and never break, only "new ones" broke.

Whatever you say.

I only have half a century's worth of experience with tube amps, I'm still a newbie.
