I have a DRRI Fudge Brownie Limited Edition which I believe is the same specification as a standard DRRI except for the speaker which is a 40w alnico in place of a 100w ceramic.

I have read much about the bright cap on the Vibrato channel but there does not seem to be any consensus. Some say that as volume increases the difference between the Normal and Vibrato channels becomes less noticeable. I read one review the owner had installed a toggle switch on the bright cap only to find that it made no difference. Others insist that the cap has to be clipped or removed to make the tone of the Vibrato channel bearable.

So I tried a little experimentation of my own as I had some time on my hands. I used my Strat for this with the tone and volume controls on 10. Reverb and Vibrato on the amp were off.

My amp currently has a JAN Philips 5751 in V1, a Tung Sol 12AX7 RI in V2 and a TAD 7025 S (mullard style) in V4. I also have a Radial Twin City ABY Amp Switcher pedal so that I can easily switch between channels.

With the Normal controls set to: Volume 3, Treble 7, Bass 5
and the Vibrato controls set to: Volume 3, Treble 6.5 and Bass 5
I could not detect any difference in tone when switching between channels. I even went so far as to put a towel over my switching foot and ABY pedal so that I could not see which channel was selected then tried to guess which channel was engaged. I often got it wrong.

My conclusion has to be that any tonal difference between the Normal and Vibrato channels can be overcome by tube selection and/or adjustment of the tone controls.

Do other DRRI owners have similar or differing views?

I've snipped that bright cap out of many a DRRI for clients who swore they could tell the difference (bear in mind, many of these folks preferred the tone of a new Celestion V30 over that of a vintage Jensen C12N). Whatever. An easy way to make thirty-five bucks. Personally, I left the bright cap in situ in my own Deluxe Reverbs -- two vintage examples, one re-issue. All sound great.

I thought that snipping the bright cap was done to make the amp sound better when using dirt pedals on the Vibrato channel?

There are dozens of different reasons why folks feel compelled to have the mod performed.

At the root of most is "Gee, I think I read it somewhere on the web......".

If they spent more time actually learning how their amp's tone controls worked they'd save themselves some money.
