I have a Bassbreaker 15 and a boss rc20xl loop station. The looper is in the effects loop, but it isn't behaving the way I expected.

If I record a loop and have it playing, if I turn down the master volume on the amp, the loop volume doesn't change. I can turn the master all the way down and the loop still plays at the level it was recorded at.

I thought effects loops came between the preamp and power amp. Wouldn't this mean that the master volume would affect the loop signal? Or is this the way it works and I am just misunderstanding the way it is wired.

This is my first amp with a loop btw.

The loop is always after the ( normal ) volume.

In some amps the loop could be ( in theory ) before the Master and if you shut down Master Vol you'll get no sound.

On your amp, master volume look to be before the loop. Schematic is not available yet from Fender :(

I've been doing some more reading since I posted this question. Can't find anything specific about the Bassbreaker 15, but most everything says the effects loop comes between the preamp and poweramp. This makes sense to me because most pedals want a line level signal. Coming after the power amp definitely wouldn't be line level.

It sounds like your effects loop operates the same as the effects loop on my Super Sonic 22, which is definitely between the preamp and power amp. I think the master volume controls the output of the preamp rather than the degree of amplification provided by the power amp, which is constantly at "full." As a result, the master volume does indeed effect the level of the signal going into the effects loop. Higher volume = hotter signal into the effects. The signal is easily TOO hot at higher volumes - causing my digital effects to distort in a terrible way. That's why I don't use my effects loop for effects much any more, but instead have gotten used to, and come to enjoy, running my effects in front of the amp, the old fashioned way. I do find that a looper works fine in the effects loop however. My looper has a knob to control the output level so I use that to control the volume of my recorded loop rather than the amp's volume control, which as you note, has no effect.

By the way the situation is different with the effects loop on my Super Sonic Twin. That loop is not between the preamp and power amp and it has separate gain controls for the send and return. I don't use it very much either, but for different reasons . . .

On the supersonic there is no Master Volume.
You have Volume, Gain 1 and Gain 2 wich are in the preamp. As see on schematic.

Effect loop is after those controls.

A Master Volume is always after the preamp, just before Power Tubes stage

Thanks for that correction/clarification. I did not understand what counts as a "master volume," and assumed the volume control on the SS22 gain channel functioned as a master, but I see now I was incorrect. When I run a volume pedal in the effects loop, THAT's a master volume then.

Since the effects loop on my SS22 functions the same way as the OPs Bassbreaker 15, maybe what we have learned is that the control labeled "master volume" on the OP's Bassbreaker 15 is actually not a true master volume control either -- rather its part of the preamp.

1- Not realy a master volume IMO because it is before the Phase Inverter tube.

2- You are right
