I'm no amp tech, but I'm pretty sure that switching around the power tubes is probably not such a good idea. Something about matching and bias?

I guess if I stuck the power tubes from amp 2 into amp 1, the bias would be off a bit (amp2 tubes rated 9, amp1 tubes rated 5), but I'm not sure that's all that big a deal. I searched around, and it seems that the worst that could happen is the tubes would wear out sooner than they might usually, which doesn't seem like much of an issue now, and I'd just be doing it temporarily to see if it is in fact the power tubes on amp1.

Sorry about the problems and hope you get it sorted out. I bet it's something simple, but the consumer shouldn't have to mess with that. :(

Yes, pretty ridiculous. I'm essentially working quality control for Fender and Sweetwater.

I have a cheap Yamaha Strat copy and a Yamaha PJ bass....both surprisingly good quality, never had a problem.

Yamaha might not have the most exciting instruments and musician's tools in the world, but they have a very consistent quality. It's not for nothing that schools and music teachers tend to favor Yamaha. If a kid wants to try electric guitar, I tend to say "get a Yamaha Pacifica, and not a Squier". Precisely because of quality. You won't have to gamble on getting a good one.
For higher end guitars, Fender and Gibson are still very much part of the game, of course.

For amps, well, Fender doesn't have the Custom Amp Shop anymore, and my experience is that build quality has also gone the wrong way the last few years. At least with the British guys (Marshall, Orange, Vox and Laney), you can still buy British made products - they may cost a bit more than their outsourced products, but you have more of a choice to get quality and amps that can be serviced. For American amps, you're almost forced to go boutique these days.

I can't speak for him, but Sweetwater gave me a $NNN store credit after I sent a detailed letter of dissatisfaction with their quality control, after getting Yet Another flawed product.
I'm still on the fence with whether that's enough to get me to buy anything else from there, at least until I hear from others that the QC has changed for the better.
Their sales department is excellent, but that doesn't make up for bad QA.

I like Elderly Instruments, because they will go out onto the floor and test stuff for you, and tell you if there are any concerns, whether new or used. Good luck with that with Sweetwater/Guitar Center/Zzounds.

Nada, but after adjusting for inflation, in 1965 money, that comes out to nuttin'!

+1

Elderly is the store all other guitar shops should emulate, but alas, they are one of a kind. Their one drawback: they do not ship used amps.

I also bought a TRRI (Twin Reverb, see earlier post), which had a problem that was resolved by changing out a tube. Since then, the amp is everything it's supposed to be. I wouldn't swap it for anything else.

A couple of other issues, btw, I noticed a slight ticking with the vibrato, and in searching around, it seems this is pretty common, (even with vintage amps?) but I'm not sure if it's actually something that is wrong and should be or can be fixed.

Another thing is a fairly noticeable sympathetic rattle of sorts on certain notes which I believe is coming from one of the power tubes. I don't recall that from when the first amp was working seemingly fine, and I'm not sure if it's the tube itself or the tube socket.

Thanks to you and everyone for your help!

JLewis, Fender built very good products IMO but on some amps the desing or quality control are missing.

It's all nothing but history now. Today FMIC keeps itself afloat by treading on a customer's perception of days past when Fender indisputably ruled the market by producing *THE* industry standard in musical-instrument amplification. The current reality is a far cry different......

If I weren't, this thread and the myriad of others dealing with the exact same QC/QA issues wouldn't even exist.

For the record, Sweetwater wants me to send amp 1 back, as even if it's just the power tubes, it would have to be re-biased, and are going to send preamp tubes for amp 2.

I notified Fender of all this, and they suggested I take the amp(s) to an authorized service center, which would entail a couple of 2 hour drives.
