If you can return it, do it. My guess is the issue could be cold solder point(s) and/or bad circuit board. Both hard to find and fix.

Sorry about that. :(

I was thinking about a clone of some sort. A bit pricier, but I guess a thousand dollars isn't enough to get a properly working amp.

I can't believe on the official Fender Forum, the going thought is to ditch Fender for better quality elsewhere.

And there's not even a rep from Fender here paying attention to the crap people are going through because they believed Fender was one of the all-time great standard quality brands.

I had plans to buy a Fender Strat, a Fender Precision, and a Fender bass amp...but as of now, forget it!!!! I have a cheap Yamaha Strat copy and a Yamaha PJ bass....both surprisingly good quality, never had a problem. I also have cheap(er) tube amps from Vox and Crate.....solid as a rock for years!!

Thought I'd move up to the "real deal". What a disappointment!

So I figured seeing as I have 2 amps here, I'd try switching tubes around to see if that would fix anything.

One thing for sure, the 2nd amp is worse than the first in general. The reverb also howls and causes feedback.

Looking at the power tubes on the first amp, they definitely look bad...one is pretty dim and the other has a lot of blue happening.

If I stick the power tubes from the 2nd amp, which are rated 9, into the first amp, which are rated 5, is there a major problem with that?

Fender gear really is fantastic. The Strats and other instruments are truly first class, "real deal". I bought a 2014 American Standard Strat that is absolutely flawless. Fit, finish, sound, setup, etc - incredible. I also bought a TRRI (Twin Reverb, see earlier post), which had a problem that was resolved by changing out a tube. Since then, the amp is everything it's supposed to be. I wouldn't swap it for anything else. Like you, I don't understand the problems with some of the new Fender amps. When they are working as designed, they're hard to beat. I think the UPS/FedEx shipping has something to do with the problems. Dunno.

I'm no amp tech, but I'm pretty sure that switching around the power tubes is probably not such a good idea. Something about matching and bias? Preamp switching is OK as long as you use correct tube specs (12AX7 vs 12AT7). Sorry about the problems and hope you get it sorted out. I bet it's something simple, but the consumer shouldn't have to mess with that. :(

More than a thousand is not expensive for a good low power tubes amp.

How do you think a 1965 Fender Deluxe Reverb cost in today money ?
Few thousand

+1000!

Original blackface DR's now command up to three grand and even the early silverfaces are close to two.

I lucked out with my drip-edge '68......grabbed it just before their prices began to soar skyward.

Hey Arjay! I found this nice BF DR on EBay. One Q: Is that the original grille?

Thanks!

I'm guessing there are many satisfied users of modern mass-produced Fender amps here (myself included).

I'm also a non-technician but I know from layman's experience that having a good set of tubes, properly seated in clean sockets, can make a huge difference with noise issues. I suspect shipping is rough on the tubes and the soundness of the installation. And the quality control of Fender's stock tubes appears to be inconsistent at best. I've had great success with recent TAD tubes by the way - they have really turned my amps around. :P So I wouldn't give up on an amp with noise issues until the tubes have been definitely excluded as a cause.

Seems to be all original to me, Steve.

Pricey but nice!

I read somewhere that the list price of a Deluxe Reverb in 1965 was $240. According to this website, $240 in 1965 is the equivalent of $1,819.42 today. See http://www.dollartimes.com/calculators/inflation.htm

That's remarkably similar to the $1,799 price of an Allen Accomplice 1x12: http://www.allenamps.com/accomplice.php

Well, according to Fender, it costs about a thousand in today's money!

I get what you're saying, but I really didn't realize I was cheaping out. I thought I was moving up, and I thought Fender was still a decent and trustworthy brand, even if they are cost cutting with circuit boards instead of hand wired or whatever.

I certainly didn't expect an amp that doesn't work correctly within the first month or day because they cost so little. Like I said, I have a Crate which was probably not even $300 in today's money and it has never had a problem.
