Hello,
I recently bought a Fender Deluxe Reverb 65 from Sweetwater. Amp seemed great, but all of a sudden, it started making this crazy loud static noise, even with nothing plugged in, and all knobs on zero.

Here's a video clip:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/55rcs9gtoepgv ... e.mp4?dl=0

I'd like to just exchange the amp, but unfortunately, it's past the 30 day policy they have (by maybe 18 days), so they are making me trouble shoot the amp. They think it's the power tubes.

Also, that noise is intermittent. If the power tubes were bad, would they work fine sometimes? The amp can seem fine for awhile, and then burst into that noise. Turn amp off, turn back on, and it's back to seeming okay. Then randomly, it will burst back into that noise. They want me to pull each preamp tube one by one to verify it's the power tubes. With the noise being intermittent, I'm not sure that will be easy to verify.

Thanks for any help.

To me it is a noisy 12XX7 tube. It happened some time in new amp.
Yes intermittent trouble are not easy to find, but what ou could do ?

1- I'll remove and plug few times each tube , this may "clean" socket 's contact and tubes pins.

2- Remove 12XX7 tube one by one and listen the amp if noise.

Thank you for the reply!

If I pull each tube, and there is no noise, because the noise is so intermittent, I'm not sure what one is to conclude from that? If I pull all the preamp tubes and the noise never happens, than would replacing the preamp tubes be the fix, or the power tubes, as Sweetwater is suggesting? Confusing.

Above all, really hate to be troubleshooting and pulling tubes on a brand new $1000 Fender amp. Really disappointed. :(

Unfortunately you've got plenty of company.

From the owner/operator manual......

Δ CAUTION: No user serviceable parts inside, refer servicing to
qualified personnel only.

Send it back for repair, replacement, or a refund.

I was wondering if Sweetwater having me pull tubes would be voiding my warranty, too.

I really wanted to love this amp. In surfing around, I do see a lot of people having trouble with brand new Fender amps. I thought maybe the problems were more the stuff made in Mexico, and thought the made in USA would be quality. What a bummer.

Tubes are not made in USA neither in Mexico

Take the time it need. Be patient . Remove first tube, power On the amp all the night or next day , listen if noise,
No noise, remove second tube, don't put first tube in the amp, leave it aside.
Do same same with all tubes if needed do not remove power tubes

That is a problem with the FTC regulations for "Made in U.S.A.". Unless "all or substantially all" components are of US origin, including all significant parts (like "tubes" in a "tube amp"), stamping a product with "Made in U.S.A." is against FTC regulations.
As far as I know, the Hecho en Mexico eagle stamp doesn't have as strict rules.

Many companies skirt this regulation by substituting the phrase "Assembled In U.S.A.". Automobile manufacturers are notorious for this.

I'm so sorry to hear yet another new Fender amp fiasco. Join the many of us who have suffered these things (just outside the return window). The pulling tube trick is great for isolating a constant noise problem, but worthless in getting to the bottom of these insane hit and miss problems. I have also had the incredibly loud static noise that comes and goes (nothing plugged in, all at zero). I don't think there's a problem with your tubes. I did have a bad preamp tube that was causing a hiss, but what you have is different. All I can say is, I have been lucky and for the past several months, it seems to have finally gone away. I think I was able to isolate it to the standby switch, but only a guess. In a fit one night, I started switching that switch back and forth (slowly) until I think I loosened up something (like a dirty pot). Dunno. You can't return it and no one can fix something you can't make happen. Switching tubes won't hurt your warranty. Just be careful. The dreaded bad connection is possible and this is where the warranty can pay off. It will need to be serviced by a Fender certified tech for coverage. Good luck.

Exactly! Very very frustrating, especially with a brand new amp.

Good news for me though.....Sweetwater agreed to exchange the amp!! So my faith in Sweetwater is restored. Now the question is will my faith in Fender be restored. I hope so. (Curious, does anyone from Fender hang out on this forum? Are they aware of the problems people are having?)

I guess my question is now.......any tips on putting an amp through it's paces so I feel good about going past the return date confident that the new amp is in working order?

Thanks everyone for the help and commiseration, appreciate it.

I try many new amp in the show room, many of them where noisy. I ask to talk somebody about that. They send me a good guy but he don't know about amp ...

To me it look Fender don't care about that :(

+1

They keep building junk because people keep buying it.

I love Fender amps......I just wish they still made them.

Faith destroyed!

Oh my fricking god, this amp is cutting in and out. I seriously can't believe it.

The normal channel seems fine, but the vibrato channel is messed up. I thought it was alright when first plugged in, at a low volume, everything seemed okay. Then turned up to 5, and it started cutting in and out. I thought, jeez, is it my guitar, my cord....so I switched guitars and cords....same thing.

I suppose it could be the preamp tubes, right?

God, I suppose I should just send this back for a refund and forget the whole thing.
