Electric guitars in church are "mandatory" in the cotton states. You can see some nice rigs and hear some good playing Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings.

Back when I was playing in my church's band I remember reading a funny quote:

"Most church bands sound like a crappy U2 cover band. Unless they're really hip, then they sound like a crappy Mumford & Sons cover band."

Of course I say that tongue in cheek. Some of the best players I've seen were playing for their church. There was a big hit a couple years back called "We Believe," which was made famous by the Newsboys, but it was written by the worship leader at the church my In-Laws go to, and he would play guitar with one hand and piano with the other simultaneously.

indeed. I have to say, I've never seen an electric guitar in any church I've ever attended. Is it a "midwest" thing? or are we talking about....

For Christian churches, it's seems common in most of the bible belt, although more common in evangelical than catholic churches, for sure. Sister Rosetta Tharpe was an early adopter:

For non-Christian churches, it depends. Some abhor music altogether. Pagans tend to be mostly for acoustic instruments, but some embrace modern music. The Church of Satan embraces electric and electronic music (LaVey was a pretty decent keyboard player, and their new magus, Peter H. Gilmore, plays multiple instruments and has a master's degree in music.)
