The original silverface editions are very tasty-sounding. I own two -- a '68 model and a '77 that's been upgraded to a taller cabinet and a 15-inch speaker. The Deluxe Reverb is a timeless classic.

Under $1000?

Playing Alternative and using pedals. Then.... Are you going to use pedals for dirt?

If so are you really going to use the SS Burn channel? Something to think about...

Update: I went to the music shop and was able to play all three. The clear winner for me was the Supersonic. I love the feel, tones, and versatility. I was actually surprised at how good it sounded. Will definitely be picking it up soon.

Thank you for all the advice, everyone!

And to answer the above question, I think what I'll do for awhile is pick up a maxon overdrive pro and run a tc electronic nova system through the effects loop.

Since we are talking single channel amps under 1k.

I'll recommend the HRD III. I consider it more a single channel amp, yes it has a Drive channel and IMO its servicable, but I keep it on the clean channel and use pedals.

Considering:
Unless the amp your looking at has a master volume.. You going to use pedals anyway.. Even at 22 Watts i.e. the Deluxe Reverb, chances are your not going to push that amp to breaking up without your band mates saying WTF? Wanna turn that down? One of the amps I practice with my band with is a HRD III usually set at 2.5 -3 and its plenty loud. The HRD III are about $300 cheaper than a DRRI and then you will have coinage to by some pedals (That your going to need anyway)

I have the HRD the one that preceded the III, best amp for my taste in tone so far. and I have had many a more expensive amp including Marshall's, Boogies, (& other Mesa Engineering amps) Many of the classic Fenders both black and silver face. and my HRD on the clean channel gives me the exact tone I wished for, all of these years, and many thousands of dollars wasted on hi dollar amps. I use pedals in front of the amp. I changed the tubes to JJ's and the speaker to a Cannabis Rex, and adjusted the BIAS. and I could not be more happier.

I looked into the Hot Rod (and the blues junior). For some reason I just can't get excited about those. They are great amps but there's just something about them that isn't for me. If I'm being honest it's probably just the fact that everyone has one. Every church playing guitarist I know uses a hot rod III and a vox Ac30. Even when I went to the music shop the guy was like "most people who play the deluxe end up buying a hot rod."

So again, I'm sure they're great amps and obviously a LOT of people are very happy with them but I'd rather be playing something a bit different, I suppose. I'm not trying to sound snobby or anything because again I don't have any experience with tube amps at all; it's just who I am - I have to be a bit different.

A guy at work uses a blackface Super Reverb, at his church. I nearly had to cut his arms off, in convince him to R&R the OEM filter caps. He "helped" supervise the fix. Now, he is glad he did. But, at the time of the fix... major palpatations.

Years ago I used to use my '78 ultra-linear Twin Reverb (the only amp I owned at the time) for church. Now, I find my Spankmaster Reverb or a standard Deluxe Reverb to be much more convenient and manageable.

I suppose I shouldn't say that everyone uses those amps. I actually live in a city that is a hub for a lot of ministry organizations, and I'm familiar with this guitarist who plays for a very famous worship band. His pedalboard alone is worth about $5k, and he plays through a couple of Matchless amps that I'm pretty sure cost around $10,000. It's a sweet setup he's got going on.

Different churches, different customs.
This little beauty would have been appropriate in the last one I went to:

indeed. I have to say, I've never seen an electric guitar in any church I've ever attended. Is it a "midwest" thing? or are we talking about....

Haha!

I don't go to church now but the one I went to had 3 electric guitarists on stage typically. And an electric bassist. They were big into the ambient guitar thing.
