Greetings, Snowy. Good to hear from you. I absolutely love my Tube Depot 5E3. I played if for a while as-is, but then made some mods (in consultation with Rob Hull.) I wanted to tighten it up a bit and add some headroom, since I primarily play jazz with a 335.

I updated the output transformer to a 40w ClassicTone OT for a Bandmaster/Pro Reverb. This OT came with an 8 ohm and 4 ohm tap, so I hooked up both, one to each jack, to have two speaker impedance options. The amps power increased to around 30 watts. With this increased power I am now able to run either 6L6s or 6V6s. For a nice loud clean sound (with just a little "fuzz" on it a la Grant Green), I use 6L6s with a solid state plug-in rectifier. If I want to go back to a classic 5E3, I shut the amp off, let it cool, and install the 6V6s and 5AR4 rectifier and I'm back in business.

I went through just about every preamp tube combo imaginable. I've settled in on a 12AY7 in V1 and 5751 in V2. Just that little reduction in gain factor with the 5751 makes it loud and punchy, but not out of control like it was with the 12AX7 (especially with my PAFs in the 335). A 12AT7 or 12AY7 in V2 just robbed too much of the punch from the amp.

For a speaker, I've settled in on a Jensen C12N. I tried an Eminence Cannabis Rex, a JBL E120 (crazy heavy!!!), but liked the C12N the best. There are better speakers I could use, I know, but I had one laying around and it does the trick.

The only change I made to the circuit, at Rob's suggestion, is to change the value of R23 from 4.7k to 1k to tighten things up a bit. It seemed to work. Also, I hooked up the jumper to the 8 ohm speaker jack, but usually run with it out.

Your pictures were very helpful.

Sounds like fun times Skip. One thing to try if you haven't already, try running with the Negative Feedback jumper set to enable Negative Feedback. It will clean up the amp a bit (actually amazing how it makes a quiet amp even quieter, mine is silent), tightens the Bass up a bit and also widens and flattens out the frequency response/eq, making it a very nice/more versatile platform if you like to run a pedal or two, and might be just the ticket for cleaner Jazz stuff. I'm running a Crex in mine, decided to try it and really liked it, lots of clean headroom, solid Bass and still has plenty of sizzle in the top end with my Strat, I thought it might be dark but no this amp still has plenty of range on the Tone knob to get bright as I need even with the Crex.

Thanks, Snowy. I just checked and mis-spoke. I do have the jumper in the "In" position. When I first fired it up, it still had the 20 watt OT, 6V6s, 2 12AX7 tubes, and the jumper out. With my PAFs in the 335 it was completely out of control...It was a little better with my American Strat. Everything sounded like Neal Young, even at low level. All the mods gave it some clean headroom and balanced out the tone. It's nice to know, though, that I can get that sound if I want it. I'll give the CRex another listen.

 Yep, Neil has that same problem every day..... Get's up in the morning, hits a lick or two and thinks to himself, "Everything %&$#in' thing I play sounds like Neil Young"

He's done alright for himself with that sound.

Personally, I preferred the less-grungier tones of his Buffalo Springfield days.

Buffalo Springfield, and even better; Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young!

His solo work with Crazy Horse was also quite tasteful.

Who was Neil with, around '69? Nearly any, long, live version of "Cowgirl in the Sand" is my favorite of all Neil Young. 8)

One of my favorite Neil songs to doodle around with on the Martin. Sadly, can't play the Blues Harp worth a lick.

That's a timeless classic, much like "Down By The River".

Neil, as a solo artist, fell off my radar subsequent to "After The Goldrush". And once he became an enviro-fascist I stopped listening to him altogether.

The original post was concerning mojoparts. From the kit’s picture I see carbon resistors and oversized orange caps. Wouldn’t you want like low noise metal oxide for plate resistors (or others) and smaller caps to fit in your new build. The caps are probably Vishay/Sprague Orange drop type. Great caps, but Fender doesn’t use them, why should you. They seem so physically large for their value. The resistors and caps don’t seem to match. CComp resistors seem like old technology and the Vishay caps are, my guess, a new modern cap technology. I guess the “mojo” in mojotone are the carbon comp resistors.

Anyway, great project. Thanks for posting. I hope you get a lot of enjoyment from that amp. I enjoy reading about it. It’s more than I might do. Don’t mean to be critical in any way, just some forum stuff. You really could make a closer to real 65 DR, a better reissue, more like a Custom-Shop Deluxe Reverb. The end product will be well built and a thing of beauty. Probably lots of people use those caps. You could use all the existing potentiometers. Nos tubes, cloth wire, whatever,
