Thinking of picking up a Fender Super Sonic 22 to pair with a Fender 412 cabinet I have that is going unused. The cab has 100 watt Celestians. Is the 22 watt head going to have enough power to push the 100 watt speakers? It's a lot of bucks for the super sonic and I'd hate to find out that there's just not enough power there to optimally drive those speakers. Appreciate your learned opinions!

You could adequately drive that 4 x 12 cab with a 6-watt Vibro Champ.

Have no fears, the SS22 will sound great, huge in fact.

I agree with Retroverbial.

Power handling of the speaker is just ...power handling. Nothing to do with power input.

Sensitivity of the speaker is what you need to look for.

Correct. So long as the speaker (or speaker system) has an SPL of 94 dB or higher, that's amply efficient enough that even a low-powered amp will produce plenty of volume.

Report back with your impressions once you've played the amp awhile.

Got to drop by a Guitar Center location I'm not normally near today. There's one near my mother in law that happened to have a Super Sonic 60 combo - I think it's a 210. Got to spend a few minutes with that and a variety of Fender amps, playing a non USA tele. The SS 60 honestly didn't do much for me, and the digital reverb was just not good (used amp so can't say it's representative; it sounded broken quite honestly, just died very quickly, no real decay if you know what I mean). So ran through some others for comparison - Blues Jr (not so much), deluxe reverb (better), HR deluxe (great but uncontrollably loud), and Twin (best by far to my ear). Though 85 watts, the Twin volume was much more controllable; I could run the vol at 4 or 5 and it was quite tolerable (versus the hrd being blistering above 2). I was really surprised. I guess it's a circuit or a pot thing? Or maybe having the second speaker diffuses the power a bit? Anyway, I will give the Ss22 another look, but might have to put a Twin into consideration! Will let you know how it comes out. Thanks again.

If you buy one and it doesn't quite work out you can always use it as an anchor for your bass boat.

Why not give the head-only version of the Deluxe Reverb re-issue a try?

Can always use another anchor! I don't think I knew there was a head version of the DR. After all that reading, including the Fender site, never picked up on it. Lot's of Bassman/Band Master heads out there used, but prefer a two-channel option. Ton of Mustang heads as well, but want to stay tube and the whole modeling thing is just too complicated for what i do. I'll check it out.

This model may now be OOP but there are still plenty of them out there.

Hey all.

So after all your inputs, I did a little more researching, rethinking, and handwringing over all the options. And decided I'm iust going ahead and getting the SS 22 as originally planned. I talked to GC in NY Times Square as they have a used one going for $600, the best pric I'd seen. A couple days ago 'm about to call GC and order it, and as I'm poking around in Reverb I find a brand new (old stock) Band Master VM head going for $600. 40 watts, 4 button foot switch, full factory warranty. And it turns out the seller is a small retail shop 50 minutes from where I live. So This morning I connect with the owner, and put the wife and kids in the car and we take a drive. He also had an Ss22 combo and I got to play them side by side (though closed back 212 for the bandmaster and open 112 for the SS). bandmaster was clearly louder, but it was tolerable loud (versus HRD). From a tone perspective, to my ear, the bandmaster blew the SS away. Rich, warm, great bottom end, percussive. The SS was ok, nothing wrong with it particularly if you want the higher gains. But for me, it was no contest. I do wish the reverb was spring versus digital. But hey, I don't heavy up on reverb anyway, and I get digital delay and chorus to boot. They had some mini squire strats at the store as well, so I got one each for my two kids and we took the bandmaster home and had a family jam. I'm about an hour into the bandmaster now and it's sounding awesome through my 412 closed back fender cab. Terrific day! I really appreciate everyone's input. Thanks again.

Stu
