is there a special indicator in tube language that tells whether a tube is soft, medium or hard? as mentioned, I want a little more clean headroom in my accomplice. there are a lot of choices out there, and some don't give me quite the difference in the description. sounds like having a hard tube would help.

also, would the recommended bias change between soft, medium, and hard tubes? the recommended for my amp with 6l6 tubes is 30 - 35. don't know if the plate voltage changes with these tubes.

thanks for your patience with me. the older I get, the more I realize I don't know as much as I think I do!

Frankly, I think you're pissing in the wind.

If you wanted a big loud/clean sound from an Allen amp you should've bought the Encore or the Old Flame. The Accomplice (and the Accomplice Jr) were designed to compress and saturate at low-to-medium volumes, regardless of which output tubes are installed. IOW, it is what it is. And no 6L6 of any brand is going to transform it into a Twin Reverb.

thanks for the advice arjay. I have been trying to educate myself about how tubes work, and how they effect tone and volume. the last thing I want to do is spend a bunch of money on non-returnable tubes that still don't get me where I want.

that being said, I do like this amp. it is well-built, and is loud enough for smaller gigs. I do have my blackstar 60 watt amp if I need it.

once again, arjay to the common-sense rescue. glad you are here for us!

Just trying to be helpful, sir.

Use the larger amp when the situation warrants and save the Allen for more intimate venues. They're really great amps.

The Winged C's were the SEDs (a division of Svetlana), but they stopped making them in 2012 unfortunately. They were some of the best modern tubes made. Fortunately, the new production Mullards are very close in tone and hold up better. Avoid most Sovteks and avoid JJs entirely.

I never found anything remarkable about the JJ's, especially their 6V6GTA's. *Some* of the Sovtek's are acceptable.
