can an amp that uses 6l6 tubes use any 6l6? I have a set of medium (4-7) tubes in my allen accomplice jr. I feel as though I get breakup a little earlier than I like. I was wondering- would a hard duet give me a later breakup? thanks all

Generally, yes. You may also substitute a modern 5881 in lieu of most 6L6 variants.

I do what I can, PB.

Don't forget, you'll need to check (and if necessary, adjust) the idle bias whenever you change power tubes, both to optimize the amp's tone and to extend the service life of the new bottles.

Yes with a new bias.

Bias for 6L6GC and 6L6WGB can destroy a 6L6

Here's a nice display of some current 6L6-types. The "Wa" is important. Adjust bias to about 60-70% of this max, per tube --- for most Fender amps.

Among contemporary 6L6 tubes, I've had excellent results with the Electro-Harmonix and Tung-Sol STR offerings.

I've had good results with the TAD's and though a bit maligned, the 5881WXTs by Sovtek have served me well in two amps.

FWIW

Some of the Soviet stuff was very good, eg: the winged C's from Svetlana.

Gently used. My brother pulled them from a Sunn 2000S top that he converted to a solid-state diode stack.

my accomplice jr. uses 6l6gc, so i'll probably want to stay with them. just need to find some with later breakup maybe. the amp has bias testpoints and adjuster on the back, so no need to remove the chassis.

if I go to a hard duet, do I need to re-factor my bias settings? the recommended setting from allen is in the 30-35 range, which is where my medium tubes are now set.

as always, I appreciate the learning experience. there are so many tubes out there, not sure what direction to go.
