It is hard to differentiate between a normal "properly functioning" tube amp and a defective one until you hear a few good ones. If you want dead quiet, get Mustang and turn up the noise gate.

I will take a good tube amp with normal hiss over the 'Stang. I made it he swap earlier this year with zero regrets.

I suspect your tube amp is normal and functioing as intended.
A DRRI is supposed to be clean with later breakup. I'm sure experimenting with tubes could change that to an extent. My 2014 Twin Reverb Reissue is absolutely dead quiet. With EQ's wide open, bright on, and volume at 3, & nothing plugged in, I hear nothing but silence. As I go past 3 up to 10, I get a very gradual low hiss. When I first got it, right out of the box, I had an idle hiss which didn't respond to any adjustments. After getting some clues from this forum, I isolated it to a bad preamp tube in V4. Problem solved.

This is why I tell folks not to settle for less than quiet from a good Fender blackface reissue tube amp. It's a good design. The TRRI is the powerhouse of these blackface reissues. If it is quiet, I don't know why the others wouldn't be the same. I'm not talking about the 68 custom reissues or other series/brands, just the vintage blackface. I have no experience with the others. Having said all that, I agree. It sounds like your amp is sounding as it should if you're not experiencing hiss/noise..

On the direct purchase, I believe you can order from their site (or phone) just like you would any online store. I've never tried it, but plan to in the near future.

OK for the those of you following the saga of the Fudge Brownie, I think (at the risk of jinxing myself...knocking on the back of a birdseye maple neck) we have come to a positive conclusion with a 4th, yes 4th!, unit. Just to recap

Unit #1 (2015) - suffered from RFI issues
Unit #2 - sounded awesome but had an intermittent loud humming/noise issue (bad cap?)
Unit #3 - not happy. At first I thought it was an open box but now not 100% sure of that but it does in retrospect appeared to have suffered some sort of trauma within the box. Sound was very sterile. Footswitch was not working. I reached out to ZZounds to express my frustration at the condition of the amp and to report the non-properly functioning footswitch and they basically told me to take it up with Fender under warranty. So I basically told them I want to send it back for a refund, which I did.

Still though, I really wanted this amp, especially after how nice #2 sounded and they are the only ones with Fudges left in stock so I sucked it up and ordered another one in a last ditch attempt at satisfaction.

#4 just arrived and I am happy as a clam. I let it warm up on standby for 15 mins and just played it for another 15 mins. It is the most quiet out of all the ones I tried. No noise. Footswitch works as it should. I play at a lower volume, just over 2, and the cleans are nice and chimey but when I hit the strings hard, I get the nice warm tubey early breakup I did on #2. NOTE: I am playing through a strat with EMG SAs so that may contribute to the early breakup.

It took some persistence but looks like this story may have a happy ending after all.

:D

That's great because you've used up your quarterly allotment of forum bandwith chronicling all these trials and tribulations.

Seriously though, I'm glad it ultimately worked out. Now play that sumbitch like you stole it.

Unfortunate it had to go to such lengths but i'm so excited I am thinking about knocking off work early just to walk 5 ft to the other side of the room and start playing (I work from home). I am also excited to try out some pedals with it but waiting on a power supply I don't think will arrive til Monday

I downsized my secondary board to a Pedaltrain Nano with TC Corona Chorus, TC FlashBack Delay and PolyTune 2 tuner. I am also waiting on a Catalinbread Sabbra Cadabra distortion. Simple setup.

The DRRI interfaces well with most effects pedals so yours ought to sound tasty.

And I think you'll find that most stompboxes have a better S/N ratio when powered by a wall wart than with BA90 batteries. Just beware of ground loops between your pedals and the amp.

Yep, I plan on using an isolated power supply running off the same outlet.

10 Days later, still going strong (knocks on birdseye maple) . ZZounds also coughed up my refund quickly with no hassle on the previous endeavour.
