With a little paint, those Shuguang tubes make excellent tree ornaments for XMAS.
You must find a better rectifier for the DRRI. I do have some NOS Philips-ECG mil spec 5AR4 (based on the Sylvania design) and a few Philips-Mullard GZ34. Both are excellent. Real GE ones with the etched dots are excellent, too.

As for that speaker...

Can't wait Beemer !!! (notice I spell it different every time LOL)
Thanks again !!!
I do have a tightly matched set of RCA 6V6GT and a few pairs of Sylvania's in 6V6GT so.................

I'm seriously thinking of trying this Speaker in the DRRI

Image

Its just an Eminence made for Carvin, still 100 watt speaker in a Deluxe Reverb so..................
But a Swamp Thang is a monster and they sound great in a DRRI, so does a Weber 12A150 8)

Chris,

The Weber 12A150 or that Carvin will definitely keep the DRRI clean to very loud. It's what you want from this amp. So either one should be ok.

Matched RCA 6V6GT is the OEM tone setup for this amp. Sylvania will be a bit cleaner and maybe a tad more sparkle to the reverb. But, lack the warm mids of the RCA. Worth trying both.

As with nearly all used amp deals there are catches

The reverb is weak, I cleaned then replaced cables, it got worse LOL !!!
The used cables I tried were probably from another DRRI

New Speaker installed

Isn't this fun !!! I really did miss talking shop with you guys 8)

I'll probably clip C-10 while I'm in there or replace it ??? not sure yet

Could be the reverb wires are reversed? Or you need a stronger 12AT7 driver tube.

What did clipping C-10 do, again? Seems like a high frequency filter on the vibrato circuit (to help prevent oscillations???).

Here is C-10 removed from the chassis a 47pf ceramic
Image

And the replacement, a 27pf Silver Mica
Image

Less treble Ice pick and much smoother with OD pedals !

Done enough of them to be done in about 30 to 40 minutes total.

"Made in Chian. Election Tube."

What's to fear? I'm sure it'll be ok. Sold as matched pair --- who's counting glass envelope size, anyhow.

:P  :x:

Thanks, for explanation and photos. Wonder why Fender didn't put a BRIGHT switch on the DR or DRRI? Like they did on the 6L6GC amps?

I see why the guy ended up selling me this DRRI for 500 bucks
The reverb was iffy at best and so we negotiated for three days and he finally said mine was his only offer with the reverb acting funky.

The Blue & Red wires on the little reverb Transformer read 1.2K ohms
The Green and Black wires only read 1.5 ohms
BIG difference from primary to the secondary winding eh ???

Image

Ordering a transformer this morning, should take 20 minutes to swap out
