Hey gang,

Anyone out there playing a Gibson ES 335 through a Fender Custom Vibrolux Reverb? I'm curious how you set your amp settings for rhythm and lead work. Any feedback would be appreciated

Don't have one of the vibroluxes, but I do play my ES335 through my Bantam Bass Amp. My settings are Treble on 9, Mids on 4, and Bass on 6. I use a pedal for grit and don't change my settings much. Since it is a 30 watt Bassman for the most part, this gives me some nice tones, especially when the volume is up around 6! The amp has a '65 Concert Series 15 inch speaker, FYI.

FWIW

After pondering this a bit more, I have a friend who has the same amp, but he plays Gibson Les Paul Special, if I get a chance I give him a ring and see what settings he is using and post em for ya. It has P-90s , but might give you some other possible settings to try out.

Twist those knobs until you get what you like, little changes make a big difference. Volume also makes a big tonal difference, what sounds cool in your house, might not sound cool in a band or big room situation. The only real way to have your tone at your fingertips, is to fool with it through trial and error in all the situations.

Its a good combo. I generally have the treble around 6/7 and the bass on 4/5, bright off. This Korean Tokai has a maple neck though so its naturally a bit brighter than a mahogany necked 335, its got 300K CTS pots with pio caps, & gotoh mk2 pafs, 95% sound of a real one and I got this axe for 250 smackeroonies :-)

I recently purchased a VRC to install a pair of early 1970's JBL D110f's I've had since 1991. I purchased the frames of four of them that had reputedly been blown in a Super Reverb by Johnny Winters when he did not like the clean sound of them. I was looking for a "mini-twin" in this amp, but was REALLY disappointed in the really early onset of distortion. The JBLs helped, but there just wasn't enough clean headroom for me. I took the amp to my tech here in Houston, and he modded it by increasing the negative feedback, and working to make the wimpy reverb much more lush. The result is that I don't experience breakup until about 6 on the volume setting for either channel, and the reverb is downright glorious. Each channel has a different tone stack, so I like to use an A/B Y box to change between the channels, or use them both for a really thick, full sound. I now have my "mini-twin," and a whole lot more. Guitars I run through this tone monster are an American made Epiphone Sheraton reissue, a Fender Nashville Power Tele, and a Heritage H-550. In each of these guitars there is installed a Fishman piezo pickup bridge, giving each an acoustic sparkle and sheen that just explodes through the JBLs. In addition, I recently obtained a Gretsch Electromatic 12 string that sounds enormous through the VRC. Settings on the tone stacks are usually pretty close, treble around 7-8, and bass at 5-6. The bottom end of the JBLs is so fat, round and clean, that it isn't necessary to turn the bass up so that it distorts. End result: I LOVE this amp!!!!!!

Old thread, I know.

I have a 68 custom vibrolux and a 68 custom reverb dlx.
My 2 main guitars are my 91 Strat Plus dlx, and my ES335.

The custom vibro has 2 different channels and each is a different tone stack, which is one of the reasons why I like the new custom/silver-face amps.
The left/custom channel is a "darker" more mids tone, and the right/vintage channel is the "brigher" more treble channel.

As for the simple 2 tone settings, what works for my taste and room conditions will mean nothing to you and your tastes. Included in that are the other variables such as the tubes in the amp, environment/room conditions, strings, picks, our fingers, any effects and their tone settings, etc.

The point is that you have to adjust all those things to your liking.
Now, if you have a specific question as to how to get more of this tone or that tone, then I could suggest some things to get you in that direction.

When I get a new amp I start by setting the amps tone controls to the middle/12 o'clock position.
Then I play and listen. I adjust the tone to extreme left and right and play in those extreme positions for a while to get a tonal feel for what is happening and adjust from there. When I get a new effect I use the base amp settings that I've already spent time achieving so that I have a base reference by which to hear what tonal changes are coming from the pedal. Once I have spent time with the new equipment's tonal character I then experiment with the tonal interplay between the equipment, the amp, the effect, the guitar's tone.

Some days I like the settings I had the day before, and other days I can't stand it and tweak. Those adjustments can last a week or more, or I think it sucks daily and start fiddling again.
I change the strings and the tonal dance starts all over again.
There's a reason it's called "fiddling".
LOL! :)
