Where does Fender stand on the concept of playing a bass guitar through a guitar amp, specifically a Fender 68 Deluxe Reverb?

Thanks.

I have wondered about that myself

FAIK it's all about the speaker's ability to handle the increased excursion caused by the much lower frequencies of a bass.
There should be no issues otherwise. Would it sound good?.....that's another question.

Plan on purchasing a replacement speaker. Real soon.

Without the damping effects that a sealed-back enclosure provides, the LF signals will overstress both the suspension and the surround to the point of failure.

Ignore this advice to your peril.

So even at low volumes?

I have done it with a Vox combo amp with open back, and so far I have not blown a speaker.

What about using an external (bass) cab with the Fender Deluxe?

Also, what about a guitar with an octave pedal? Don't those go down far deeper than a bass?

Plus, I have a little bass practice amp which has a tiny speaker and an open back and you can crank that pretty loud and it's made for bass.

This is a perfectly viable option that I myself have used from time to time.

Your amp wants to see an 8-ohm load for optimum coupling so choose your bass cab accordingly.

Any recommendations (that won't break the bank)?

My goal is to add a little Fender zing to a bass DI for recording.

Thanks.

Something akin to one of Ampeg's Portaflex enclosures would likely work -- most of those are spec'd for eight ohms.

Something like this I guess would be good. To be clear, if I plug this into the external, and unplug the internal, all is well, right?

But are not bass amplifiers voiced for more bass frequencies?

Sure you can try and use others but it may be cutting things well, short.

No..unplug the internal speaker and plug the 8 ohm cab into where the internal speaker was.
Seems like an expensive route to go for a low powered bass amp and since you're not sure how it will sound. I'd take the same $$ and buy an inexpensive ss bass amp.

+1 on all counts, with special emphasis on the highlighted portion of the quote. Small, low-powered bass amps can always be found at bargain prices on C/L and Ebay. For your recording purposes this might be a more efficient choice. I didn't realize how expensive a new bass cab would be but IM4Tone has brought the options into perspective.

I have an inexpensive bass amp. It doesn't have a nice tube tone. There are probably better ones. I suppose I'd be taking a chance on that, too. Recommendations on one that won't break the bank?

I thought maybe since the Fender Deluxe 68 has the bassman channel, it might have a cool sound for bass. I have some amp software, and using the bassman amp in that sounds pretty good on bass.. The original bassman, the one most people like for guitar with the open back (which brings to mind the question of why would an open back blow the speakers),

Thanks.

Which brings to mind the question of why did Leo abandon the open-back Bassman design in 1960?

The answer is simple: He grew weary of having to replace customers' 10-inch speakers in the open-back 5F6-A Bassmans under the terms of his company's warranty which blew with increasing regularity as bands began playing louder. As well, he became convinced of the sealed-back bass-reflex enclosure's superior efficiency and tone during the R&D phase of the Showman Amp.
