hi everyone, i have a few questions. my De Ville (2/12s) is about 5 years old, i bought it new. my first question is with the stock tubes and factory bias it sounded so so, about 2 years ago i replaced all the tubes and re-biased myself. ok, assuming i did nothing can you guys tell me what your settings are to get a very, but tight overdrive, i've been chasing Lesley West's sound since 1971 (yeah, i'm that old). i play gibsons most of the time. now i know this is a very subjective thing, i'm looking for something to point me in the right direction.
i never use the channel switching pedal that came with the amp and never, ever use stomp box's (i call them help-me box's).
the closest i ever came was when johnny thunders showed me how i should set my twin the way he did which is the following, plugged into the reverb channel, bass on 0 (zero) mid on 0 treble on 10 and much reverb and of course the volume set as high as one can get away with. my old twin didn't have a master volume but if it did that would be on 10 and control the volume (if you want to do such a thing) with the channel volume and guitar.
now with the de ville everything is wired differently so the before mentioned settings don't apply.
so with that information can anyone give me some ideas?
oh yes, the bias, i have to look inside the amp to see how i adjusted it but according to what i've seen on youtube i have it set hotter then factory specs.
any thoughts, ideas and questions will be much appreciated.
thanks
jp

Are you using the amp's bright switch and presence control?

If so, switch the bright off and limit the presence to mid-way or lower.

A speaker change to Celestion V30's or Greenbacks may also help.

Most of Leslie's work with Mountain and later with West, Bruce & Laing was more bass-heavy than many realize. A guitar equipped with P90's will also help.

I don't know how is your knowledge;

Factory setting mean nothing to me.
You should set bias for the tubes need + sound in you ears
What is plate voltage in your amp ?

I always notice a difference in the "EQ" aspect of an amp's tone after a retube and bias.
Just saying.
Sometimes it's been less noticeable than at other times.
Some tubes just lend a brighter or darker feel to the amp, I guess.

I agree with Arjay about the P90s.
West liked to use a Les Paul ( Junior, I think) with P90 in those Mississippi Queen years.
I think he used Sunn amps but don't quote me on that.

I think I personally would go with a pair of Celestion G12T-75s in the Deville.
Of course there's alway the old mix 'n match scheme too.
No law says you gotta run two of the same speakers.
Long as they're both same ohms and can take the power.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.
