I suspect a 12AY7 in V1 would be too low and bring the amp down to bedroom level.

Are you speaking of this being too low in volume in your amp?
I'm not sure--I don't know how your amp's preamps and gain stages work with one another.

However, in the case of my '63-reissue Vibroverb, it worked swimmingly. I did have to crank the volume knob amp much higher than usual for live performance/club volume, but I don't have to dime it by any means--and it worked perfectly, for both guitar and harp (mic).

Good idea, musicmatty. I'll give it a go. I have two 12AT7 tubes, two 12AX7 tubes, and the 12AT7 / ECC81 Mullard in V3.

Cheers!

Try to keep in mind that these base line amps such as the hot Rod series Fender amps which are truly good amps, come with a generic preamp tube lineup. Fender already knows that most people will change out the preamp tubes as they do guitar strings on most guitars for their own preference. This is also true with the speakers ..as Fender has been using 'special design' which is nothing more than an economical speaker however, recently they have upgraded to Celestion speakers in most of the hot Rod Series amps. Most people are satisfied with the tone and sound of the amp and the circuitry that the amp comes with once they settle in on their own personal preference for speaker and preamp tube lineup
