Hello All!!

Glad to be a part of this forum!

So I'm looking for a Fender tube amp in the sub $1,000CDN (about $800US) price range. I've been looking at the typical Fender tube amps you see everywhere and the ones that have stuck in my head are the Tweed Blues Jr and the '65 Deluxe Reverb RI. Played em both and loved them both. Im still learning about my style of playing but the guys I look up to the most are guys like Clapton, Gilmour, Beck, SRV, Gary Moore, Hendrix, L.West, Knopfler, so on and so forth.

I'm wondering what you guys/gals recommend. Do I get a Blues Jr Tweed or do I spend 3 or 4 hundo more and get a slightly more versatile amp in the DRRI? Which one of the two amps will grow along with whatever style/tone I may choose to follow?

I know you guys hear these questions all the time but please bear with me :D

Best,

Deegz

No contest.

Go with the Deluxe Reverb.

Arjay is right. DRRI No contest. It has the classic Fender tone.

The SuperSonic22 is based on the DRRI platform but has a few extra goodies in terms of extra gain and grind.
It will be priced in a similar category with the DRRI.
The caveat there is the SS22 had some reliability issues in the first couple of years.

Members more knowledgable than I might be able to testify as to whether those issues have been ironed out.
If they have been, you may want to consider that option as well.
I haven't played one but I have heard them played on stage by others and they definitely rock.

I'm going to be the odd man out here and say that no tube combo amp is going to "grow along with whatever style/tone you may choose to follow". It's going to sound exactly the same whether you branch off into country or hungarian death metal. What can "grow" is your collection of stomp boxes and your playing ability.

I remain very happy with my SS22. Note, the first was replaced under warranty, but this was one from the floor at my local GC. The little rock and rollers probably beat it to death. The replacement has been a good amp.

The burn channel does give the amp added dimension beyond the DRRI. The burn, with two gain controls, is not just for shredding. This can be dialed in to give some nice organic break up that complements the vintage channel.

It will cost a bit less than the DRRI at your local GC as they are on clearance.

Thank you guys for the advice! I was sort of leaning towards the DRRI but was a little unsure. I think I'm headed the DRRI way after hearing from you guys. I haven't heard any Supersonics in person so I'm not sure what to expect but I do love those white knobs :D I'll have to see if they have any SS locally

As far as "growth", perhaps I should have worded it differently. I think I may have been referring to versatility of an amp. The amp that will stick around and sound exceptional whether I play blues, rock, country or so on.

I'm still going to shops and comparing as many amps as I could. So far I've tried a couple of Princetons, HRD, Blues Jr's, and a Deville. The two I've been looking to try out are the '65 TRRI and the Vibrolux Custom. Any thoughts on how they compare to the DRRI?

Best,

Deegz

The TRRI will sound like a monstrously jumbo-sized DRRI but never have the warm, smooth breakup of its smaller, more portable cousin.

The Vibrolux Custom really doesn't sound anything like a traditional blackface Fender since it does not deliver those sparkling cleans.

Thanks Arjay!

I'm really glad to hear your opinions. I'll keep you folks posted on what I end up with but the DRRI seems like the perfect match :D

Cheers

Agree w/ all the others on the DRRI over the BJr.
I do like my Supersonic 22 very much as well.....try one if you can. It has added versatility w/o using pedals. Yes, there were issues when first released, but after mine was repaired on warranty, there have been no recurrences.

Thanks IM4Tone! I'm gonna try the Supersonic if I can find one. I have so many question about my Strat and the gear I can pair it up with and so far you folks have been excellent.

Cheers!

A nice Strat will sound great through pretty much any quality amp from any manufacturer.

I would go with the DRRI, personally...just to stir the pot, I would throw in the idea of the (newer) Fender '68 Custom Silverface Deluxe Reverb as well. I've heard many good things about those, and I really liked the Princeton Reverb version of that particular line of amps.

I'm keeping my eyes out for a nice DRRI, I'll be playing as many amps until then. Those knobs look neat! I'm gonna have to look into it. Thanks :D
