Hey everyone,
I just acquired a used Mustang V head. When I first turn it on, after about 2-3 minutes, it begins to cut out. Like, I will strike a note, or a chord, and no sound will come for a split second, then it will.
It is strange behavior. It first started to do it when I turned the gain on one of the '65 Twin presets. If I turned gain up past 5, it would do it. But then it started feeding back and doing this cutting out on every preset. Well, this was my first use of the amp, and I was scrolling through the presets from 00 up. I switched to 99 down, and it stopped. The next day, when it happened again, I kept playing, and after 10 or 15 minutes, it stopped. I played it the rest of the night at band rehearsal, no problems, but, I had programmed three of my own custom presets, and was only using them at rehearsal.
Long explanation, I know, but, wanted my problem understood. One other thing, the amp is running Firmware version 1. I noticed version 2 is available, adding it may help.
Does anyone know about this problem?
Why it is happening?
Is it "user error", or amp mal-function?
Any help will be GREATLY appreciated.
Thanks,
GUS

Try a factory reset first. Power on while holding the Exit button, if I recall.

Is yours under warranty?

It has something on the back that I interpreted as made in 2013. But, I got mine used, are the warranties transferable?

The five-year warranty is transferable but only if you are in possession of the original sales receipt and that retailer was an authorized Fender dealer.

Sadly, it is true:
IMPORTANT: PLEASE RETAIN YOUR SALES RECEIPT OR LEASE, AS IT IS YOUR PROOF OF PURCHASE COVERING YOUR LIMITED WARRANTY. TO TRANSFER THE WARRANTY TO A SUBSEQUENT PURCHASER, YOU MUST ENDORSE THE SALE OF THE PRODUCT TO THE SUBSEQUENT PURCHASER ON THE FRONT
OF THE SALES RECEIPT. TO TRANSFER THE WARRANTY OF A PREVIOUSLY LEASED PRODUCT TO A SUBSEQUENT PURCHASER, A COPY OF THE INITIAL LEASE MUST BE ATTACHED TO THE SALES RECEIPT. THIS LIMITED WARRANTY IS VOID WITHOUT SUCH ENDORSED SALES RECEIPT OR ATTACHED LEASE.

To receive warranty service, return the complete product to an Authorized FMIC Electronics Service Center, with proof of purchase, during the applicable warranty period. The Fender Dealer from whom you purchased your product may also be authorized for warranty service and should be the first point of contact when service is required.

Yes! I have no argument with Fender, or the guy I swapped with. My amp that he took in trade was much older than the Mustang (I think), and we swapped "AS IS".I can contact the seller, he may still have the receipt. But, before I bother him, how do I date my amp?
There is a place on the back that says something to the effect of "made in 2013". Probably not exact words. I'm at work right now, can't look at the amp.

Any digital amp problem = Restore factory defaults first!

I have done the factory re-set. I actually did that before I noticed the problem. This "glitch", so far, has been temporary, and even if it continues as is, as long as it doesn't get worse, the amp is fully usable.
Another thing I'm thinking is that upgrading the firmware may fix it. I have found the "About this Amp" feature, and I still have v-1 of the firmware. I have to say though, plugging a working amp into a computer to change it in some way really scares me. I'm an old guy, born in the 50's, but I'm pretty tech savvy. I just have this feeling in the back of my neck that more could go wrong than right on an amateur re-program of a digital device. I'd rather have this crackle for the first 5 minutes after power up than to just have a big ol' Fender doorstop.

Some may ridicule me for my TRRI purchase. Yet, all is good in paradise and 4 more years to go on warranty. It's a beast and has only gotten better. Replaced some tubes. What's the big deal? Love that movie.

Quite possibly a loose connection, maybe only a wonky solder joint.

The firmware update is extremely unlikely to brick your amp.

Or a ribbon connector not fully seated.
