Something has happened to my 68 Custom Deluxe Reverb. It is still working, but the volume seems to be about half of what it was and it no longer has the nice 3 dimensional sparkle and depth. The sound is very flat and one-dimensional and the amp feels flat and lifeless under the fingers.

I replaced all the tubes except the rectifier - but no change.

I had used it at a recording studio for a few tracks and it was fine. I wanted to add some tremolo to a part, but did not have the footswitch with me so the house engineer tried a couple of other footswitches he had laying around. When it didn't work, I shut down the amp and used another amp on that session.

A week later I fire up my CDR at a gig and immediately noticed that something was wrong. Low volume, lifeless, no harmonics, no depth, etc.

I tried inserting my correct footswitch and messing about, but the amp is not coming back to life.

Does the circuitry of the footswitch jack affect the master output of the amp? I'm wondering if plugging in the wrong footswitches at that studio could have caused some damage or is behind this issue in some way.

You must try rectifier too, power tubes need to check bias and adjust if need.
Did you put all new tubes in same time in case you need more than one ?

There are so many kind of footswitch I don't know.
Basic Footswitch with only dry contacts ( only a push button, no power, no led, nothing just switch ) may not harm your amp.
Did you try another speaker ?

Resume;
Check all tubes, rectifier first it may be this one
Check speaker

+1

As well, check all voltages at the specified test points, especially the B+ (power-tube plates) and the bias supply. Loss of "sparkle" is often attributed to power-supply problems.

wow this is old. I wish I could say I found a fix, but I didn't. I ended up buying another new 68 custom deluxe. It has been solid.

the authorized Fender repair shop found nothing wrong on their voltage readings, but the amp was just not even close to being the same one I had purchased and enjoyed.

I couldn't sell the old one in good faith and I couldn't stand seeing it in my collection, so I just chucked it in the trash. (I pulled the speaker and tubes).

Too late.

It's already bio-degrading in a local landfill.
