There's obviously something loose inside my HRD and I'm hoping the fine and knowledgeable folk here will help me get rid of the annoying rattle.

After removing the back cover I tightened all screws I could see on the outside of the amp. I didn't tinker around with anything on the inside. The rattle is present when I tap on the cabinet with the butt end of a screwdriver and when playing through amp. It's not there when the amp is on Standby so I'm thinking could it be tubes? Here is what it sounds like: https://soundcloud.com/bluer-monkey/hrd-rattle

The rattle is particularly loud when playing C and A (concert middle-C and the A below it).

Thanks & Cheers
BM

Can't be sure but it sounds like it may be the speaker itself

Ouuhh ... sounds serious. I'm kind of hoping it would be something easily remedied by tightening or squeezing or maybe worst case scenario changing a tube. If it were the speaker, wouldn't it be making the rattling noise all the time?

Sounds like tube rattle. While making the noise that you hear, grasp each preamp tube and see if the rattle stops or changes. You should use an oven mit to grasp the output tubes.

You had my hopes up there for a moment, shimmi but alas the rattle persists. There was no change at all when I grasped each tube (preamp and power) one at a time. Since I was already in there, I reseated each tube but still no change and no joy.

The amp is just over 4 years old so could this be something covered by the warranty? At least it's NOT intermittent.

Thanks and Cheers!

Check your reverb tank -- you may have a detached spring.

Thanks, Arjay. Because I have on more than one occasion fixed things beyond repair, I'm thinking that before I start removing the reverb tank and ending up with more parts than Fender put in, I should rule out the tank by unplugging it and listening for the rattle. If the rattle disappears then the issue is with the spring so I'll go further. If the rattle is still there then the this would rule out the reverb tank. Does this make sense?

Thanks & Cheers!

I took the amp to a qualified tech and it turns out that there were several things contributing to the rattle. First and foremost the power tubes. These were replaced and the amp rebiased. The RCA cables on the reverb tank were loose and so was the output transformer. I don't recall now if he told me that he replaced a resistor or a capacitor but this was causing some rattling on selected notes.

Anyhow the amp is working fine now so I just thought I let y'all know and say thank you for your input.

Cheers!

Hope you can get a nice stretch of hasslefree good music out of that amp :P
