Why not phone ahead and ask stores what they have in stock before you make a long drive?

That's a problem we all run into, even in the larger metropolitan areas. I live in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, and there are dozens of well-stocked music shops, from mom-and-pop to big box, and it's hard to find some of the higher-end new amps or vintage amps in good condition (i.e., not needing restoration or a lot of work done to them)...but they are out there.

Pick up a copy of Vintage Guitar magazine. There are multiple reputable dealers who advertise many of the items we're talking about--and some may be in your area.

+1 on Arjay's suggestion to buy vintage, since you're spending that much money anyway.
