Is it a printed circuit ?

The Tone Master was a Custom Shop design, whose line also included the Vibro King and Dual Professional amps. Each of these models featured a hand-wired chassis.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts!

Well, a couple of things come to mind. The first that came up for me is that this amp was designed to be an arena rocker. I'd guess most of the guys that used this amp as such would only be using the clean channel cranked.

BMW2002Ti: Thanks for checking out that schematic. I will share that with my tech when we pop this baby open tomorrow. Any thoughts on how negative feedback loop would affect the sound of the amp? I've surfed a lot the last couple of weeks, and this change seemed to be the most common (there really isn't a lot of info out there tho).

Stratele52: Being situated in central/northern Maine there aren't exactly a large number of interesting amps for sale on any particular day. So I roll the dice all the time trying out different Fender amps. I had almost settled down with a Super Sonic 60 head, but saw that this amp was a hand wired deal, and after reading around a bit, figured it might be easier to modify than a printed board amp. It is always an adventure, that usually costs me more money than I get back when I sell them, but I enjoy the opportunity of experiencing different amps. Maybe some day I'll settle down with something for good.

Thanks again all, and please if anything else comes to mind, please share.

Dave

The amp doesn't appear to have any global negative feedback. GNFB is used to help keep the distortion level down, in the final stages. Helps to increase output power. But, it tends to make tone a bit more sterile and powerful. Not sure this is what you want.

Doesn't appear to have typical local feedback on any of the stages. Not sure with all the switches and sub-circuits. I would not touch the FB in this amp. Start with cathode bypass cap in the input stage.

If result is not enough try one or two coupling cap changes . Keep same mfd values, but go to PIO caps. Like the Russian mil spec K40Y-9. Or even some Jensen PIO. The input stage 0.22mfd (C2) or the 0.047mfd (C16, 17) in the phase inverter to output tubes stage may make a big difference in the quality of the tone.
