If price is a consideration, the HRDlx III might be a good choice to cover a variety of tube driven sounds.

when I play gigs with multiple acts, I see more HRDlx III amps than anything else. I'm guessing that's due to a combination of affordability, reliability, good tones, and the right volume for most gigs. And at around $800, you would have a couple bills left over in your budget for other stuff.

I'm going to second that (on the above) HRD .. there is a reason why you see a lot of working musicians using these.
Although you see a lot using a DRRI too .. another great choice. I will admit I'm partial to the HRD.

i have a mustang 3 v.2. bought it a while back, and have been very happy with it.

I decided to look for a tube amp. saw a blackstar club 40 at a local guitar center. played thru it and liked it. went back later and it was gone-bummer.

later I see that sweetwater has the soloist 60 marked down to 499. didn't waste a minute, and am very happy with it.
I am, however, keeping my mustang. it is lighter than my tube amp, so when I need to jam, or move it to another part of the house to play, its' a lot easier to move.

Not to insult anyone's gear, but in my opinion and experience stay away from the Chinese tube amps unless they are the more pricey (Orange, Marshall, or Vox amps. Marshall & Vox top end Asian amps are made in Vietnam). They are using the absolute cheapest components available sans speakers). You cannot go wrong with the MIM, HRD line, Blues Jr., or Blues Deluxe amps. However the DRRI to me (US made) is hands down the best tube amp for the money. I have not yet played through the Bassbreaker series, but the reviews are mostly good. The supersonic 22 may soon be gone & certainly worth looking at, you may find one used for under a grand.

I can recommend a Hot Rod Deluxe/Deville. I have a Hot Rod Deluxe, and it is one of my favorite all time amps, along with my Egnater Tweaker Head which is just as nice, a little different sound, but I can tweak it to almost the HRD tone.
