I'm hoping some of you can point me in the right direction without getting too much harassment. I'm wanting to purchase a Fender Tube amp, I want to get in the tonal area of John Mayer, clean and slightly overdriven. I know a lot of his tone comes from him, I get that....
I don't want to spend a fortune, it will just be an at home amp, not used for gigs.
Can you please give me suggestions.

Thanks,
Sean

Have you checked out a Deluxe Reverb RI? For around $1000.

+1

I'd say that meets all your criteria.

Another vote for the DRRI here.

Another vote for the DRRI but you might want to consider one of the limited editions that Fender puts out from time to time. They have the same spec as the regular DRRI except the speaker which is a Jensen P-12Q rated at 40 watts so it breaks up a bit sooner than the normal 100 watt rated speaker. I have a "Fudge Brownie" and I love it!

Is there something similar to the Deluxe Reverb but a little smaller and cheaper? I was hoping to stay between $700-$800. I've looked locally for a used DRRI, but can't find one.

I can't speak from personal experience but the Fender '68 Custom Deluxe Reverb might be a possibility.

DRRI is a hard one to beat, I have one and it gets turned a lot..
It will pull you into it, if you know what I mean..

Personally I stay away from the 68 Custom Series, I have a 68 Custom Twin Reverb and I ain't liking it at all..
I do like my Blues Deluxe Reissue with a Eminence Swamp Thang which might be in your price range new..
I like my Egnater Tweaker Head with a 2 x12 and a 1 x 12 cab, pretty versatile little amp..

One of my best banging around amps is a 1976 Musicmaster Bass 6v6 tube amp with an Eminence Cannabis Rex in it..
I use a compressor, dirt pedal, tremolo, carbon copy delay and a reverb pedal with it.. I cannot keep people from plugging into that thing when they come over.. Got it for $70.00 at a yard sale.. I see them on eBay around $200.00 and up.. I want another one..

There is the new Bassbreaker series, which comes with varieties that don't require rebar reinforcement of the walls in order to play them, nor a second mortgage in order to pay for them.

Are they going to be as good? Doubtful. But a 15W or even 7W Bassbreaker might be a better match tonally for JM like sound at wife-friendly levels.

Yeah, that Bassbreaker 15 combo has a Celestion V speaker + reverb. That might sound good.
Also consider a Blues Deluxe, or the Hot Rod series options.
Not to slight the suggestions of a Deluxe Reverb, that’s a fine amp, a bit old school, but a great amp.

The challenge for me to sound like John Mayer would be to learn his songs, and guitar parts.
Lots of Fender tube amps might sound good if your Strat is doing the part.
Best thing to do is, keep learning songs and start an amp and guitar collection.
I try to learn new songs. Already have a collection going on.

Every time I go to the store and play them side-by-side I end up preferring the Princeton Reverb. It just seems a little sweeter and less barky than the Deluxe Reverb. But I've never owned either so take this with a handful of salt.

PRRI seems nice. Esp if it is anything like the original BF or SF Princeton Reverbs.

Not really.
I mean .... of course there are other amps available that are smaller and cheaper.
I guess it depends on how you define the word "similar".
The DR always has been sort of in a class of its own.
I suppose you could look at the PRRI but even thought they have the same controls I wouldn't call them similar, myself.

Keep looking, one will show up.
