Hello Guys.....
I just got the Frontman 10G, about 2~3 months back. Wow ! What an amp ! For one it's very cute looking, with the signature grill and the blackface look and a closed back for a better bass response. Top it with the special Fender clean tone. Boy... you have it all you need for practice. And its got a lovely overdrive too. I am loving this little guy.

GREAT for beginners but lacks any real depth, but a good starter amp with a squire if your just learning how to play and I would still recommend the frontman 25 over it.

Yep...the 10 a starter amp; but one of the best ! And yes, I also have the 25R too (R-Reverb). That's another super amp, more than sufficient for any practice and good even for small closed gigs. I use the 25R on stage for small auditorium (up to 3~500 seating) concerts and find it quite able to match up with other instruments. Of course, there is the usual sound system and the 25R is routed through the mixers and delivers good output.

WOW, I never heard of a 25W solid state in an auditorium for 300 people. It must be the sound system already installed. I play with 5 other guys and just in practice we'd never hear your amp. They are basically just a starter amp though and if you spend more you get a lot more. Even a blues Jr will give you a nice creamy sound you'll never find in solid state and bring your guitar alive. I use an Egnater Tweaker when the blues Jr went to the sparkle mod that ended our relationship and I have had the Tweaker for years and the sounds you can get are just stunning. If you get to the point where you can afford a tube amp you'll see a big difference in your sound over the solid state.I use the Tweaker as an example as the sell for $599 but I found mine on CL just about brand new for $250 and never looked back. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised in the difference in tone.
IMO

Great for leaving at your parents as well when they're on the opposite coast. I didn't want to leave an expensive guitar or heavy amp (they're in their late 80s) there. So a light Squire and the Frontman 10G were the ideal solution. They're out of the way in the back of a closet 50 weeks out of the year and if my mom had to move them, she could. I have a similar small Ibanez and one of those tiny Orange amps I travel with all the time for weekends and other short trips. And right: the tone and options are more than reasonable in context.

Yes, Stevens, as I have mentioned in the post, the amp was routed via a mic through the sound system mixer and therefore, understandably louder to match up with the other instruments.

I have also used tube amps, which were the real amps back in the 60's (in India, at least), since the solid states had not made it to our shores. I have used three tube amps in my career spanning about 55 years. They are definitely good and have an edge over the sold states as far as the the tone is concerned. But they are also heavy to heave around ( I am not aware of the present one's), as they required heavy transformers. Well, you can't have your cake and eat it too...!!

They're still the REAL AMPS......

And Fender has never made a product that could surpass these in terms of tone or durability.

Lots of small tube amps out there, small with incredible sound, Try the Blackstar HT5R 5 watts with 12# speaker that sounds as loud as a 40W solid state and smaller than a Frontman there is also the Laney 12"speaker club and the Voc AC4tv all are smaller with a 12# speaker and have incredible tone and a host of small tube amps that can really have the tone dripping frpom your guitar-unlike a solid state.

Agreed, Stevens....there are a lot of them out there. But the Fender clean tone.....no one can match that, for sure ! Presently I have the Frontman 10 and 25R, a Champion 40, a Fishman Mini 60 (acoustic amp) and a Yamaha TA 40. The Yam (manufactured 1967), while a solid state, gives an output nearly like a tube, what with a 15x20 Teflon cone speaker and a spring reverb. I have tried, but find the Laney a bit harsh on the tone front though.

A young friend of the Armadillo Teen has a Frontman 65R, and I am duly impressed in how it performs. Very rich and dynamic for a solid state amp...it wouldn't replace my Vibroverb, but I wouldn't be ashamed to use or gig with it, either.

The whole Frontman series is good, and are a reasonable, inexpensive choice for a second amp, a person on a budget or a youngster starting out.

I have the Frontman 65r, and it is *LOUD* for being 65 watts! Check out this image that I made. I listed each setting on my Frontman and wrote a funny comment about the amp too.

Image

All the Fender Frontman series amps, made in China have a horrible "volume spike". The main volume pots are real screwy, extremely finicky, and very touchy!

1 = off
1.25 = a little quiet, but nice if playing softly or late at night
1.5 = normal, just a hint of loud volume
1.75 = very loud, wife gets mad and has to crank the TV in the living room, so she can hear her dumb show
2 = screaming loud, can hear the guitar OUTSIDE from out in the street
2.5 = insanely loud with feedback if standing too close
3 = windows rattle in your house, neighbors call the cops
4 thru 10 = no difference at all. It is all so loud you get brain damage and the foundation on your house starts to crack!

Hard to believe that a Blues Jr at 31lbs is too heavy for the difference in tone is amazing. The solid states do a decent clean but compared to a Blues Jr with A Cannabus Rex as the standard Speaker which can be bought brand new for $499 weighs to much is a much better investment than any solid state. Good Luck with what you have but their are much better options available for a 500 person gig.
