Same as me.

As posted before, this sounds like interference from something in your house, such as florescent lights or computer monitor. It could even be a noisy tube or reverb cables. Having this same problem with 3 amps leads me to believe that it is not the amps, although it is possible that it is an amp/tube problem.

Have you tried the amp at a different location, such as a friends house?

I have concluded that the reverb hum on the re-issues is just part of the design and probably not reasonably fixable. It's a low hum that increases as the reverb is turned up. It happens with or without foot switch and after replacing preamp tubes. It doesn't bother me, but it might if I was trying to record. Can any of you amp wizards confirm if this is "normal" or not? I read about it alot.

Hi there,

So I have had 3 of these amps over the past couple months and all three have done the same thing. The first two were used (first built in june 2015 and the second a little rougher). I just got a brand new one from the factory and is doing the same thing as the used ones.

When the amp warms up it starts making a ringing noise on and off... or a buzz. It seems like it is coming from the reverb channel because when I turn up the reverb nob or volume on vibrato channel even if I'm not plugged into that channel the noise gets louder.

Any ideas on this? I've tried outlets upstairs and down with the same issue on each amp everytime.

Thanks!

I'm sorry, even at full volume with headphones, I don't hear anything unusual. If you plug-in and play, does the amp sound ok? What I do hear is typical background noise --- common with tube amps.

This "shot noise" may diminish, as you use the amp more. Contaminates burning off the plates of the tubes.

How many tube amps have you owned in the past? None had this issue?

Thanks!

Brand new amps look noisy, not vintage one.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for the help so far.

The noise in the video is a high pitched on and off. Not the regular background static.

The amp sounds pretty good besides a few notes that produce a rattle, but that high pitched noise is always in the background. It goes iiiinnntt quiet iiiinnntt quiet. A second on a second off.

I am beginning to think it is the power coming in because of the same noise from all three amps. I can't find this noise anywhere on the Internet. I live in a house that sits maybe 300 yards from a very small power plant. Could this be contributing?

The lights in the room and cell phones aren't the cause.

Im going to try the amp at a friend's house and if no noise then I'll try a power conditioner at home.

Thanks again.

Do you have anything digital (like a computer or flat-screen TV) hooked to AC outlets on the same circuit breaker line?

Hi bmw,

Good idea.

I just tried unplugging the computer, big screen and coffee maker. (The surge protectors with every thing in them). I had high hopes but no fix.

Thank you for the suggestion.

Do you hear the "noise" with no guitar plug in the amp ?

It very well could be. EMI, like RFI, is a known generator of spurious noise when it comes to audio/video gear. And since you've had the same issue with three new-and-identical amps, this phenomenon is worthy of further exploration. If in fact it is the cause, a power conditioner will be of no avail. The amp probably needs to be shielded.

Does it happen w/o a guitar/cable plugged in?
I haven't heard that noise before, it is an intermittent pulsing thing that I hear twice in your recording at a higher frequency than the normal tube hum. Does the sound increase w/ volume increase?

Are you using the footswitch and is it plugged in tight? If so does it still happen when the reverb is switched on/off and when the vibrato switched on/off?

Try to isolate the issue as much as possible, remove the guitar and cord from the amp. Trying at friends house away from the PowerPlant may be useful info or not, since you want to play it at home I presume.

It may be a tube issue, Fender didn't sell you the best tubes available. I would change or get a replacement/backup set for the whole amp. Do a little shopping around research and spend what you can afford.
As others have said, the reverb driverV3(GrooveTube12at7) and the reverb returnV4(GrooveTubeECC83-S) are the key tubes for the reverb. The Vibrato tubeV5 is a (GrooveTube12ax7r) and the Phase InverterV6(GrooveTube12at7) could also be problematic, more often the PI(V6). I've replaced/changed all these tubes in my DRRI.
I haven't swapped reverb leads from the tank to plug-in for better shielding, but it sounds like a good idea also.

Arjay isn't talking about that type of shielding, that's for audible isolation vs electrical magnetic interference...

Have you checked to make sure all the tubes/covers are seated properly? wait until they are cold, carefully turn the amp wrong side up, use safety precautions to avoid electrical discharge!! unplugged & one hand only inside-no metal/jewelry etc.etc., a bright flashlight helps- visually compare the tubes.

Correct.

I'm referring to a Faraday cage......

So I warmed up the amp so that the noise was going on and off, I then unplugged the guitar cable and no noise.

I then plugged into the normal channel and the noise was quite a bit quieter but still there. I then plugged back into the vibrato channel and the noise was back in full force. If I increase or decrease the volume on the guitar or vibrato channel when plugged in to the vibrato channel the noise gets louder and quieter.

The footswitch made no difference. Before I was not using the footswitch, I plugged it in and messed around a bit and no difference. Turning the reverb pot up and down did not change the sound. Only the volume on the vibrato channel and guitar volume did.

This makes me think that it is internal to the amp.

Once the amp cools down a bit I will try to visually inspect the tubes. All of the covers are on them at least for v1-v6.

That sounds like a bad guitar cable  , do you have a spare to swap and compare? Does your guitar have active or passive pups? Could be the input jack also; amps are pretty fragile and shipped in the back of delivery trucks doesn't help any. Is it the same volume wise in both inputs?

Also, my amp w/ regards to the footswitch, seems to remember the last position. IE, If its on (either reverb or tremolo) when I unplug the footswitch it remains on or vise-versa. Did you try the tremolo speed/intensity pots? That would help narrow down a specific tube also. V5 vibrato, usually not a problem tube but it is a GT12ax7r so you could use the V1 tube to swap out for testing even though its an ecc83s.
