Hi there,

So I have had 3 of these amps over the past couple months and all three have done the same thing. The first two were used (first built in june 2015 and the second a little rougher). I just got a brand new one from the factory and is doing the same thing as the used ones.

When the amp warms up it starts making a ringing noise on and off... or a buzz. It seems like it is coming from the reverb channel because when I turn up the reverb nob or volume on vibrato channel even if I'm not plugged into that channel the noise gets louder.

Please see the video for example of the noise

Any ideas on this? I've tried outlets upstairs and down with the same issue on each amp everytime.

Thanks!

What happened with 2 others amp you had ?

Did you try new tubes ?
Remove reverb tank from the amp, keep it connected to the amp ( magnetic field ? )

I returned the first two for the same noise everytime.

I tried replacing the reverb tube in the first amp I had and it didn't help the issue.

I have tried removing the reverb tank from the bottom of the amp and placing it on the carpet but once the tubes heat up a bit it starts making that noise again.

Thank you for your reply.

You may try to replace all tubes in same time. But you don't have all of them in stock.

Or remove tube one by one and listen at each one if noise stop.
Amp OFF before you remove tube.

Start by V1, amp ON , listen ; noise , amp OFF remove V2 , amp ON listen........
Do not remove Output Power tubes

If the same thing is happening to all three amps isn't it a possible a dirty supply or RF thing?

What is rf?

The house is like 5 years old. Doesn't mean they didn't jack up the electrical when they built the house.

RF=Radio frequency interference is caused by every electronic device, power lines etc. Turn something like a blender on near your set up , you'll probably hear it. Equipment manufactures go to lengths to eliminate this with shielding, filters, and humbucking pickups. To me it would be surprising if all three of the amps had the same problem. However there are many guys here who really know the electronic issues of these amps,(stratele52 for example) they will have advice much more reliable than mine. For my two cents I would try a power supply conditioner , Just about everyone uses one, Some aren't that expensive less then $50.

A Furman line conditioner *may* provide relief, assuming it's an issue of "dirty" AC power within the home. I'm doubtful that the problem is RFI-based unless you live adjacent to an airport with active GCI facilities or a commercial broadcast tower.

This is a microphonic tube, most likely the reverb tubes V3 and/or V4. Be sure that when changing V3, you use a 12AT7, not a 12AX7.

If switching either/both of those tubes does not fix the ringing, try also V1 or V2. V1 is the first tube for the Normal channel, V2 is for the Vibrato channel. You can remove either V1 or V2 and play through the other channel.

Be sure to replace tubes ONE-AT-A-TIME. Yes, it's tedious, but otherwise you won't know which tube is bad. Sorry, there's no instant gratification in trouble-shooting. It's all trial-and-error. :D

So if this is a microphonic tube. Why did the other two DRRI's have the same issue. Fender is just shipping $1100 dollar amps that don't work out of the box?

Try replacing the reverb cables with a quality set of cables with better shielding. If this doesn't resolve it, you might at least. See some improvement. The shielding used in the cables for the DRRI is questionable, to say the least. I did this to my DRRI and it made a huge improvement.

Unfortunately, that's the long and the short of it. And yours isn't an isolated incident either.

I can't understand why it's standard procedure to purchase brand new Fender amplifiers expecting the 3rd exchange to be a charm, which it isn't. This is ridiculous. Are these just the rare birds that get posted on forums. I expect when I'm shelling out $1,100-$1,500 for a legendary Fender amp whose technology has been around for 60 years to work as advertised. I guess I was lucky. I only had to replace most of my preamp tubes on a new TRRI to get it to sound right. I'm holding my breath. There's only 1 authorized service center in my state that's 150 miles away with a mile long waiting list. So much for the 5 year warranty for us peasants that live in the sticks. Definitely a learning experience which I am considering bowing out of.

I bought a new DRRI last March and had all sorts of problems with tubes and the reverb which was both noisy and prone to cutting out at random. My amp is a limited edition "Fudge Brownie" so I did not want to return it as they were hard to come by in the UK.

I had microphonic and/or noisy tubes in preamp, driver and power amp sections and I ended up replacing all 9 tubes! My reverb driver is now a NOS JAN Philips 12AT7WC. A new production Tung-Sol 12AT7W also works well in V3 for me.

I still have some hum from the reverb that increases when the reverb control is turned up irrespective of where the volume is set. At home (volume no higher than 3) it can sound quite intrusive with the reverb higher than 3 but at performance volumes (5 or greater) it is not noticeable.

I hear absolutely no "ringing" in the video posted. The loudest noise that I heard was the rustle of the microphone. Are you talking about the barely audible hum?

As posted before, this sounds like interference from something in your house, such as florescent lights or computer monitor. It could even be a noisy tube or reverb cables. Having this same problem with 3 amps leads me to believe that it is not the amps, although it is possible that it is an amp/tube problem.

Have you tried the amp at a different location, such as a friends house?
