Hi everyone,

I regret to say that my dog chewed the 3 prong plug and about 6 inches of cord off my 65 Deluxe Reverb Reissue amp ... :( To me this looks like an easy fix - just replace the 3 prong plug with one from the hardware store. Am I wrong in this assumption? (Or is there some kind of magic technological voodoo in the factory installed three prong plug I need to be aware of?)

PS -I want to try and get it repaired at an authorized Fender repair shop (don't want to void any remaining warranty if possible), but unfortunately I live in the far North so shipping an amp is not always financially feasible.

Any well-stocked hardware store will have the requisite 3-conductor plug. And I'm pretty certain that your warranty does NOT cover damage caused by feral fauna -- whether a pet or an indigenous mongrel.

Break out the wire-strippers and screwdriver.

And show that pooch what a motivator a rolled-up newspaper can be.

Note: if you have a spare wire from a desktop computer laying around, just hack the end off and strip the wires, it should work.

Thanks for the reply. I'm sure I have a newspaper (or high powered atomizer water spray bottle) around my place....

BTW - My warranty concern wasn't with the cord - it was repairing the cord myself and and that action voiding the warranty on the rest of the amp..... :(

Of course, that would be absurd for Fender to void the warranty for a simple fix. Nevertheless...............

You'd have to consult your warranty and read the terms very carefully to determine whether an owner-performed repair violates the contract.

In any case, if you're replacing the entire cord you'll need a 3-conductor insulated cable of AWG18 gauge. A replacement cord for a professional-grade power tool (what I routinely use) would be perfect. About $15 or less at any Home Depot, Lowe's, or Ace Hardware.

The hard thing is to find the right overall outside diameter to fit in the chassis grommet. Many power cord are too big or to short ( 4 feet ).

Best is 8 feet.
Power cor is detachable or not ?
You may need some terminals lugs to connect in the amp.
I often had to replace these power cord .

If it's just the last six inches closest to the plug, this project is doable.

Home Depot sells a variety of three prong plugs including heavy duty ones which are a little easier to work with (nicer screws and better stress relief). I've done it twice in my life. It always stresses me out because I worry about fires, but if you're careful and triple check which wire goes where you can do it.

There's a good chance (if this works anything like cars ... but by all means read the warranty) that using a Fender part will not void anything. Easy fix and you're not modifying anything. Splicing correctly shouldn't hurt anything either but I could see someone arguing if something blew out later. Then you'd have the burden of proof that your home job didn't create the problem.

Power cables should NEVER be spliced.

Do it right or pay a professional to do it for you.
