I like the current tank ok on my BJRIII w/ the cannabis rex, but feel after about 2-3 on the dial that it gets a bit muddy. So would replacing it with the MOD tank be an improvement, or is it something else that needs to be addressed, like the reverb circuit itself?

The MOD tank *may* help but I'm thinking that you may need to upgrade the reverb driver and recovery op-amp chips.

He's right, a new chip will make a cleaner tone for your reverb. Try a TLE2072CP
The three spring reverb is a bit much for some folks. You can experiment with a dab of silicone to glue the ferrite beads at the ends of one spring to the laminations to tame it down.
If you want longer delays, get a type 4 tank 2 spring and cut 1/4" of sheet metal off each end. It's tight, but it will fit.
Hmmm. I guess I'm making the assumption a III is the same case as the older ones. I think it is.

MOD reverb tanks are not expensive I would suggest trying it and see if it helps your situation, I have one in my BJ III and it is definitely a nice tank its not as in your face as the stock tank.

There is a difference between reverb that is bad and in your face and reverb that is good and in your face.
The in your face part of the equation is determined by how much verb you dial in.
The good and bad part of the equation is determined by quality of build/parts.
