I am not going to blow any smoke up anyone's you know what. I played alot of mediocre guitar in the 70's & 80's and then got married and had kids. I tried to make a return to it in the early 2000's but life got in the way. In 2003 I bought a Hot Rod Deluxe and it hasn't been used all that much. It has three Fender branded 12AX7's and two Groove Tube 6L6's. After I power it on, with nothing plugged into Inputs 1 or 2 and take it off standby, I get a hum that is proportional in level to how I have the volume control set. I can't recall if that is to be expected. Should I have a hum with nothing plugged in?

Also, in these and other forums I see people mentioning Vs and a number referencing the tubes. What do those mean?

Also, any help in understanding this thing is appreciated. Does it need to visit an amp doc?

Thanks in advance for helping a re-tread.

V1 , V2 ....mean first and second tubes if you look at the back of the amp from right to left .

Also, any help in understanding this thing is appreciated. Does it need to visit an amp doc?
It could be one or two defect 6L6s , or 12XX7

Thanks in advance for helping a re-tread.

Remove V1 , power amp ON and Standby to PLAY ; do you ear hum ?
No ; replace V1
Yes ; same test with V2
.........V3, V4

The "V"s are how the tubes are labeled on the schematic that you will find here:

http://support.fender.com/schematics/gu ... ematic.pdf

If you notice, V3 has a 3A and a 3B. This is because the pre amp tubes (12AX7) are actually two tubes in one glass envelope.

They use a "V" because tubes are also know as valves.

Thank you for the test protocol and the schematic to the two of you. I'll get to it later today and report back.
Regards,

Just for your info.... "V" comes from old term for tubes = valves.

Remove V1 12AX7A - Hum gone
Remove V2 12AX7A - Hum gone
Remove V3 12AX7A - Hum gone
Remove V4 6L6 - Hum there
Remove V5 6L6 - Hum there

There has got to be a humming pun in here somewhere ;-)

V1 is the first tube , this mean hum is coming from this circuit or before.

1- The circuit is the tube V1 ; try another one .

2- Before ,it is your guitar ; I hope you do this test with no guitar ; report please .

Input jacks may have a bad ground ; shorting contact to ground defective , dirty or .....this may do hum .

Test ; If you plug few guitars in all jacks same time this made amp quiet if it is jacks issue .

I'll have to see who has the tubes locally. This may take a couple of days.

I did the test with nothing plugged into either input jack.

Thanks,

You may use V2 , V3 ....in V1 , any 12AX7 will do . All tube may not be noisy ( hum ) in same time.

Do the 2nd test I write if you have fews guitars

Forget new tubes. You could swap V1 for V2 see if any change.

But really, I think stratele52 nailed it a couple of posts above.
With no guitar plugged in, the input jacks should short the signal input to ground.
Try exercising the input jacks with a guitar cable, in-out, to reset the ground connection.

If ground shorting contact is broken , dirty or rusty or ...this will not work .

A use of many guitar in same time plug in all input jacks will ground them trough the guitars .
If amp is dead quiet , fix input jacks

OK, let me see if I remember everything I did and what happened.
Exercised both input jacks. No change in hum from previous.

A. Plugged a Les Paul into 1 and a Strat into 2, hum reduced but still there.

B. Swapped out V1 with a new tube. Hum significantly reduced. Noise is a hiss plus a faint hum with nothing plugged in.

C. Plugged in both guitars. Hum & hiss reduced below level from "B".

So there is now a light hiss with a faint note of a hum. Is this normal?

Thanks,
