So here's my problem: my Champion produces no sound, unless I crank up the volume and strum the guitar really hard. Only then can I hear a short, very distorted sound.

Power light lights up, fuse is not blown, both tubes light up, I've swapped out the original power tube, the speaker works if plugged in to some other sound source, etc.

Could the preamp tube be broken even though it glows, or what could possibly be the problem? It's obviously not a very valuable amp, so I don't feel like paying a pro to get it fixed.

First ; tubes glow do not mean it work , it is not a bulb light .

1- Check you guitar and wire to the amp . Direct in the amp , no effect no pedals. Try guitar on another amp .

2- The input jack ,ist it look good if you move gently the input jack when you play ?

3- If 1 and 2 are good you may need one or more peamp tube ( 12XX7)

4- Tubes are well seated ?

Thanks. Numbers 1 and 2 are not the issue. I'll try to get a new tube tomorrow and try that. I was unsure because "does the tube light up" seems to be the first thing one should check.

Tubes light up is same if we ask you if amp pilot light glow , this do not mean amp or tubes work .

Read my answer about tubes ; they are not a bulb lamp,

I could be a bad solder or resistor inside the amp more than a tube , a new tube is easy to try

A new tube didn't change anything. Also, all the resistors look ok.

Resistor may look OK and are not , Most chance is a solder .

Far from an expert, but I had a similar problem on my blues deluxe reissue. The problem then was a bad connection in a speaker cable I had hooked up between the amp and the speaker.

Be careful with this as playing it might damage components further.
