The lead is replaced with silver and copper, both of which are relatively more brittle either at ambient temperatures or when heated. This results in microscopic fractures when the solder joint is exposed to sonic vibrations or jarring, such as produced by an audio amplifier that's frequently subjected to motion and/or rough handling.

That's interesting, I always thought high silver content was a good thing, I will keep that info in mind next time I buy a roll.

My 68 Custom Deluxe Reverb is almost 1-1/2 years old and never had a problem.... until 3 days ago the 2 amp fuse blew. I replaced the fuse and the next day it blew again after about 1 hour. Replaced the fuse again and played a little while. The next morning it blew again as soon as I turned on the power (standby still off). Tried new JJ6V6 power tubes with another fuse and it blew when powered on also. I then took it to the repair shop to buy a new rectifier tube, installed it and the amp came back on... everything seemed ok so I went back home.

At home I started playing and noticed the tremolo was on.. it was on without the footswitch being plugged in and also would not turn off at all after plugging in the foot switch. There is no problem with the footswitch and the reverb works ok. I then noticed the Power tubes looked brighter than normal, I checked the bias setting which read around 38ma or more and the reading would not change at all by turning the bias pot. Normally I keep it around 21ma.

After a mintute or two I also started smelling something like that burnt electrical smell. So, I took it back to the shop and am awaiting their findings. Amp is under warranty, I hope.

I'll post later what they had to do to repair it.

Sounds like an issue with the bias supply. Peculiar for such a new amp.

OK - I think you called it right Retro.
I got my amp back today and it works great. Seems to sound better than it ever did.
It was no cost and covered under warranty.

The tech said he replaced an open resistor in the bias circuit - 22 OHM 1W FP resistor
I think it could be the resistor at 'R69' on the 68CDR schematic, but I'm not exactly sure.
