I knew I had some sort of amp that was given to me 20 or 30 years back somewhere in my collection of stuff, so yesterday I dug in and found this Stromberg Carlson Amp
Image
Opened it up and it has 4 GE 6L6GC and 2 GE 5U4GB/4as4a tubes. plus all the other tubes needed. I was very excited.
Image
Last week while driving home saw a yard sale, as I past it something inside my head had me turn around and stop in to this yard sale (very unlike me to stop) when I saw this EICO 666 for $10 I bought it and it works. I compared this to a friends Precision 650 tester that how I know it works.
Image
I then tested the 6L6, two are just in the yellow green boarder :( I will still give them a try when my amp comes back from service anyway, one was in the middle of the red (replace) one was loose from the base and lost it's vacuum  . Than I went to the 5U4GB, both rectifier tubes tested very good when right up to 140 the top of the scale :D that made me smile some.
I'm thinking of changing out the electrolytic capacitors and than putting in tubes and hear it with my Tannoy speakers it might be nice

A worthy score indeed, Mud......on both counts!

That Stromberg-Carlson would make for a pretty solid bass rig. And the Eico tube tester will earn its keep several times over.

Ya done good, kid!

Thanks I never thought of the Carlson as a bass rig but it makes sense

It could conceivably be used for any audio-amplification purposes but with that much available power at hand, it would likely be wasted if used as a guitar amp (even diehard amp megalomanics like me retired their Twin Reverbs and Dual Showmans years ago). But for a bass instrument or even a keyboard, such a superb tube platform would be quite useful.

Play around with it a bit and share your observations with us. I'm curious as to how it sounds.

I have an Eico 667 (almost the same), and it is a great tester, very easy to use. Just be aware that the built-in tube chart has a few settings errors for some of the more commonly used tubes. The booklet tube chart has a couple of errors too, but much better than the built-in chart. IIRC, the settings for a 12AX7 (among others) listed on the built-in will put way too much current through the tube, so use the booklet instead.

Mud, Nice pickups. BTW... two of the 6L6GC tubes in the SC amp look like they may have lost their vacuum.

Great info, shimmilou.

As well, not every brand/type of tube tester will have a listing in its manual for each tube. My AN/TV-7A/U offers no set-up parameters for the 7027A or the 6550. For those bottles I have to rely on my Hickock.

Start with a tube that you don't care about....and be prepared for a loud hum if the current pegs the meter. Limit the time that you use the test switch.

It seems I have only supplement 666-03 and 12AX7 are not listed. I have been on the internet and it seems there are all kinds of settings that are being used and it is confusing me some. Let me ask you, can you post the setting you are using and I will give that a try
Very much appreciated

If settings for the 7025 are listed, you can use those parameters to test a 12AX7.

I'll try when I get home in the morning. And it will give me a chance to check the charts and compare them.

I have;

(GR)35...(PL)88...(S)4... otherwise the same. So, yours has a little different Plate voltage ("PL" and "S"), but for purposes of this tester, probably good enough for you to establish a baseline. I don't see the need for different settings for each half of the 12AX7 for the Plate and grid. My booklet is, "Addendum to 667-02 Roll Chart..."

My built in shows (GR)15, (PL)80 and (S)4. With the grid voltage set that low, the tube can now pull more current than it would if the grid was higher (35, 37, etc).
