Hi everyone,

I just received a great condition 1961 Jensen C12N in the mail. Along the way though it's developed a split/tear. Just wondering how catastrophic this is in the grand scheme of things? I am guessing its repairable, but is this a wise option? I would love to hear how it sounds with my Deluxe Reverb though!

Thanks all!

That damage to the cone and the surround is evidence of dry-rotting due to the age of the speaker and the ambient humidity it's been predominately exposed to. It's possible to extend the speaker's life by carefully coating both sides of the cone at the fractured area with a thin layer of clear silicone caulk then overlaying a narrow strip of bond paper over the tear on the front side. Apply additional caulk over the patch to hold it in place. Let the silicone cure completely for at least twenty-four hours prior to use. Eventually the cone assembly will need to be replaced but this fix will generally provide a temporary reprieve of a year or two, contingent upon the degree of use and the moisture content of your local climate.

So considering the overall condition, its probably worth keeping and reconing down the road? The voice coil and spider look brand new.

Of course it's worth keeping!

Follow my guidelines and it'll sound great and perform well until it's time for a comprehensive overhaul. Then send it out to a competent re-coning shop and it'll be good to go for another fifty years, so long as it's treated respectfully.

I've patched dozens of vintage speakers over the years......JBL's, Jensen's, CTS, Altec's, even a few tasty-sounding pre-65 Oxford's. You shouldn't have any problem wringing a few more good years from that C12N.

Arjay,

Whats your take on post 65 oxfords that have been reconed professionally? I have a couple of 12"ers that I had reconed by OCS and I must admit, they sound mighty fine. None of that flubbiness that the original cones exhibited and smooth breakup when pushed hard.

Vintage Oxfords, re-coned with modern components, generally sound pretty good......certainly better than those with original parts. I'd rate them as a cut or two above the contemporary OEM speakers that Fender is now using but still lacking when compared to a Chicago-made Jensen. But like the Jensens, they're not very efficient -- most offer an SPL of 95 dB or less. Contrast that with a modern Weber, Tone Tubby, or Kendrick Black Frame where 99 dB or higher is the norm.
