Hi everyone,

I picked up this speaker after seeing one in one of Ray Butts old Echosonic amps. I figured it would make a good comparison piece to an old Jensen C12N that is on its way for my Deluxe Reverb.

Two quick questions though:
1. Any tips or tricks on dealing with old style screw terminals for the inputs?
2. Any ideas on gently bringing her back into service? Quiet playing, running music through the speaker???

Thanks guys!

University made some nice speakers. Not familiar with your model, but I'd give it a try.

Keep the screw terminals. Just get a male flat spade terminal for the amp's female connector. Add a little wire to it and wrap this into the terminal screws of the speaker.

Inspect for cracks in the cone and compliance area, before plugging into the amp. Just go easy with the volume, at first. Check for buzzing or early distortion. If all is ok, slowly crank up the puppy.

Good luck! Give us a review. :D  :D

Hey ! Thanks for the quick advice. Not sure this old man grasps your suggested wiring though. I did quickly test hook up the speaker to the amp by using the original wiring harness. Right now I have the two tinned ends held down in the screw terminals. My visual inspection shows it to be in rather amazing condition for a 60 year old speaker, and I'm not hearing any sounds of distress. My strat is rather noisy, and I could hear some extra noise out of that arrangement when not playing. The Tele Thinline sounded nice and quiet.

And did I mention the tone? Good god. What a sound. Handles the reverb much better than the old Oxford. Less of the reverb pushing the guitar signal to the back and more of an even blend. I also noticed on the Oxford that my EHX East River Drive sounded a bit tinny, almost transistor like but on this speaker it just roars. Wow!

Good deal! Wiring is fine.

Nice find. University speakers are quality stuff. Not used much in instrument amps. But, they made a lot of speakers for PA's and home stereos.
