Thanks for the kind words, ph/b.

When you finally decide to seek out that old Fender amp, we'll all be here to help you through the process.

thanks arjay.

I have been actually planning this out for a while. I am leaning toward the deluxe reverb, but also open to other suggestions. twin is probably a bunch more than I need-probably something in the 20 to 40 watt range would work fine. couple questions-

what do I look for in an old amp- other than sound of course? do I need to see the inside first (not always possible)?

is there a place to see what a fair price would be?

what is the main difference between the old amps and the reissues?

I will probably be buying after the first of the year, so I am just getting my homework moving along....

You need to see it all and just as importantly, know what you are seeing. Posting pics of the prospective amp here (or a link to the sale) will help keep you out of trouble. If the seller is not willing to provide pics or access to the amp so you can shoot your own, then it's best to walk away and find another deal. There are plenty out there so be patient.

The Deluxe Reverb is an excellent choice -- expect to pay $2500 or so for a blackface, around $1500 for a silverface. And a silverface can be every bit as tasty -- sonically -- as the earlier editions since that particular model suffered few circuit alterations during the notorious CBS era. Before buying anything, find a good amp tech locally whom you can rely on to service your new/old amp.

Great looking head-cab! This is a market Fender missed out on. Small portable head units with quality cabs. A VC head would also be nice. Crank it to "10" through that 1 x 15 JBL loaded cab... Pure sonic heaven.

:D

Thanks, Steve.

Actually, it was Don Randall who decided what Leo dreamed up was marketable and what was not. But I agree -- Fender may have missed the boat at several points.

I often thought of doing a Vibro Champ conversion to piggyback configuration, using a vertically-oriented 2 x 10 Tremolux cab. With the right speakers (say, a pair of Copperheads or Weber Blue Pups) it'd be the world's loudest 5-watt amp. Plus the "cool" factor of course......
