Original CTS/Fender speakers featured a rubberized surround so light doping would be appropriate for a re-cone. More important is the composition of the cone -- it should be ribbed and seamed as per the prototype to maintain the original sonic profile.

So I did the PI mods to this one and the .001 in the PI did reduce the subsonic bass somewhat. It also brightened up the treble a bit
I went ahead and did my usual thing with the 2.2uF poly in the V!/V2 cathodes to get the bass down to where I wanted it.

Image

First trace is stock.
Second trace is with modded PI, .001 Mallory coupling cap, 1Megs, and 82K/100K Metal film plate resistors. Also 1K WW 5W screen grid resistors and 6L6 plate diodes.
Third trace is with 2.2UF in V!/V2 cathodes, nu 25/25 in shared V1/V2 cathodes, 25/25 &2.2K in Reverb drive cathode. Bias adjust mod too.

I still think the OT is the source of the extra bass. The OT# is 022855/606-3-34. The PT is a J022806/606-3-34 Export switchable. The SN is A64590

Now I also have to replace one of the speakers. The magnet broke loose and pinched the voice coil. No rebuild possible. I just got off the phone with the customer and we settled on a WGS G10c.
In the meanwhile, I have to repair the rotted particle board on the speaker baffle. I'm digging out the rot and building it up with Elmers and sawdust in layers.
Finally, I'm going to install a 4/2 speaker Switch for smaller gigs.

Word cannot describe the dimension and fullness of sound adding the reconed CTS did for this amp
Seriously i thought it sounded good with the two and one filler speaker (the eminence Lil Buddy)
but man what a sound !

Image

I'll put together a sound clip using my good digital recorder as the iphone just cant grasp the sound, not that the digital recorder will be perfect but closer for sure.
Man i love this amp more with every upgrade, all done with the reverb circuit, it is just right, the normal has scratchy something under heavy low notes (vibration) that only affects that channel, no need for speed there as you all know, who uses the normal channel on a Super reverb ?

The reconed pair had actually lost their dust caps, given that should I recone the other pair ASAP ??? they sound amazing right now but...................... what if ?

PS 1.8 ohms at the output jack / plug Perfection !

For a vintage amp restoration with a multi-speaker array where one or more of them is damaged, I generally prefer to have each of the speakers freshly re-coned so they all start out "fresh".

IMHO, those four 10-inch alnico and the unique output tranny that the Super Reverb has in it, is what helps give you that SR tone. The CTS are great speakers. Great harmonic interaction between them.

I wonder if anyone has ever loaded an SR with four Chicago Jensen P10Qs? Like a vintage tweed 5F6A Bassman setup.

Many early pre-CBS Super Reverbs were shipped with Jensen C10Q's -- some even with C10R's (those latter amps bore the lion's share of speaker failures due to the relatively puny power-handling capability).

Sound clip time guys
Never happy with my recordings , they just don't get the real sound across
way late into this I let the volume get so high it blows out the little mics on the DR-05 Tascam so...............
but in the very end I taper it back down
Hopefully it gives you an idea (bass was too high) always a critic !
Absolutely straight into the amp from my Strat no pedals at all

Tasty tones through the mid. Somehow the bass doesn't come through so well on my 2" speakers.
I'm sure it sounds great in the room
