I replied. Here are some more photos. Sylvania 5AR4 on left. Mil spec Philips-ECG 5VA4GA labeled 5AR4, in middle. GE 5VA4GA on right.

Now, Sylvania may have made 5AR4 mislabeled as 5V4GA rectifiers for commercial use. But, it prolly was in the late 1970-mid 1980s. And not in the 1960s or early 1970s --- AFAIK. I have not seen any of these. However, construction of the tube's guts and shape of the glass envelope must be the same as their 5AR4 labeled tubes, to be a true 5AR4/GZ34.

Thanks, appreciate the photos.
Worse case scenario if its a 5v4ga I'll try it in the Bronco. If it turns out to be a 5ar4, it'll fit in the SR just fine.

One Weber 10F150 25 watt 8 ohm speaker plugged into the bottom of this 73 Super Reverb and already an improvement !!!

One Weber 10A125 30 watt 8 ohm light dope ordered this morning.

X pattern or alnico on top and ceramic on the bottom ????

The WGS Veteran speakers were great, just a bit weak as the volume got to stage levels.

Nice upgrades...
No idea where to locate them, but I'm sure they will sound good in any position.

Ya I've never mixed alnico and ceramic either.
Weber has never let me down and swapping them in is always a huge plus !!!

While we're at it.....................

The new USA made Replacement choke came in today and is installed.

While in the chassis I decided to re bias the tubes and cool their jets a bit running them at slightly over 32 ma instead of the 35+ma I had them at.
I was following a few discussions on these new Tung-Sol 6L6GC STR's and found a few recommendations for keeping them around 32 ma.

Well................... another amazing transformation ! gained a lot of headroom and tightened up the bass response even more (didn't think it possible).

I am of the opinion that when the last weber hits the cab this amp will be the best sounding amp I've owned and if you've followed over the many years I've been here, that is saying a big mouthful !!!

I'm in love 8)

SRV or David Gilmour platform at its very best !

An I-phone video will be here at some point.

Chris,

Glad it is sounded so good! Yes, you are correct. The lower the bias and still maintain good tone and dynamics = longer lasting tubes (as long as PSU is healthy).

You sure are sitting in the danger zone on that one. Close enough to get the hair follicles into 2nd order harmonics.
turn in up, I cant hear it at my house.
Did you alter the tone stack or PI stage any, the last pic I remember it still had the 330's in the PI?

Thanks so much for the feedback on my new tone monster !
The volume was set at 2.2 ish , with my Compressor boosting the heck out of those CS 54 pickups it sounds WAY louder than 2.2

And keep in mind that is with three WGS Veteran 20 watt ceramics and one Weber 10F150 25 watt light dope.
A 10A125 30 watt light dope is on the way and eventually one more of each will fill that cab with serious horsepower !!!

She really doesn't git much hair on the notes till 3.5 to 4 ish and by then the cops are coming LOL !

I'm resolved to the fact that for "My sound" I need at least a pair of 6L6GC power tubes.
My sound is Super Reverb, Bassman Head, Bandmaster etc.........
Little amps are cool for what they do, they just run out of headroom way too early for me.
The reverb part is great however I won't turn down a Bassman head from 1965 to 68 as an excellent platform to drive some speakers with !

My Bandmaster Reverb head is a definite should not have sold amp too !

Any way, hopefully Weber will have a box on the porch this week or next and we shall see if a touch of alnico adds even more sweetness to this beast.

I think that you are going to like those Weber 10A125 speakers. I replaced an SR with those several years ago. And they had a tone close to the vintage 10-inch alnico magnet speakers.

Packing up one of those Philips ECG 5AR4, for you. I see the guy is no longer selling these on EBay. Glad I bought a bunch of these and the two sleeves of Tungsol (USA) 5U4GB black plates, when I did.

Thanks Steve !!!
I'm thinking the 2x2 ceramic & alnico is gonna give me the best of both worlds.

I'm going to try the x pattern and see how she sounds

I'll keep that rectifier tube put away for a rainy day or just in case another GZ34 amp comes my way ( for me not to sell) !
