I drove to Charlotte yesterday to pick up this little peace of history. Its an all original 1966 Fender Super Reverb that sounds fantastic and for a 49 year old amp its in great condition. Even has its original four 10'' speakers and they still work great. Story behind this amp is it belonged to a guy that bought it in 1967. Used it in a church band for a few years until he passed away. Many many years later his family found it buried back in a closet. Hard to believe this amp was built at the Fullerton California plant back when I was 8 or 9 years old. People were out buying their new 1966 Mustangs and GTOs. Its already been recapped. I just changed out the two prong AC cord to a three prong cord and removed the death cap out of there. Also cleaned all contacts, pots and switches. I check all tubes and two 7025 tubes showed weak so replaced them. Just fired it up and it sounds fantastic. Guess my Dual Showman Reverb can take a break. I am still going to have my tech go through it but figured I will handle the basics. Thanks Arjay and the others on my other post for all your help.

A fine looking specimen that's ready to deliver another fifty years of faithful service.

Congrats!

Congrat ,

IMO you wil not use any more your Dual Showman with this great Super Reverb.

I suspect as much as well......unless you need prodigious amounts of loud/clean for a keyboard, bass, or pedal steel.

It's been years since I took a Twin Reverb anywhere.

Thanks guys. By looking at the picture can anyone tell me if these original speakers are CTS alnico's or ceramics? I have no idea how to tell the difference. Thanks

They are ceramics and seem to be Oxfords.

Examine the frames and determine if any EIA codes are present -- either ink-stamped directly or marked on a tag. A CTS speaker's codes will be formatted as "137 -XXX" while the Oxford's will read "465-XXX".

Nothing on the frames at all. I read somewhere that codes and dates can be under the round labels. Not a big deal as I was just curious. They sound great and have that nice vintage warmth to them. I think you are probably correct in that they are Oxfords.

Oxford usually marked their speakers thus......

Image

In this instance, a 10K5 is the correct OEM speaker for a Super Reverb.

CTS drivers as installed in a Super Reverb carry this code......

Image

CTS would later stamp this alpha-numeric directly to the magnet assembly which was usually concealed by the "Fender Special Design" decal, making a definitive ID difficult. The "064121" is Fender's in-house P/N for any 10-inch speaker intended for a Super Reverb, regardless of brand. However, Oxford seldom included that number on their drivers.

Agree with Arjay. The looks of the speaker basket, with round and oval cutouts look Oxford made. CTS tended to use a more conventional style frame.

PS: GREAT looking amp! How's the tone? [as if I need to ask]...

This 10L6 seems to be installed in a Vibrolux Reverb (which is the correct OEM speaker for such an amp).

Well this amp sounds fantastic! A small issue I have to take care of today. Noticed my power cut in and out and found the issue to be the PI tube socket needs addition cleaning or may have a cold solder joint because when I tap or move the tube the volume cuts in and out. Right now is sounding great at full volume but must as well open it up and fix that problem. I was trying different 12AT7s and 12RX7s yesterday and found my favorites that give me very nice cleans and a later break up point. I ended up putting my best tubes in V1 V2 and V4 and am using a JAN 12AT7 in the PI slot.

You can try a little contact cleaner. Caig Deoxit G-series is good as cleaner & lubricant. Good to over 250ºC.

Thanks and I have plenty of Deoxit. Learned about that stuff back in my Ham radio days. Couldn't live without it. Anyway just cleaned the socket again and sure enough found a broken solder joint. Fixed that and went ahead and touched up other solder points as well. Just put it back together and it works like a champ. Love the way this amp sounds! In tone heaven:) In a week or two I still plan on leaving the amp with my tech to go over everything but for now just going to enjoy it.

One more thing... have him check the fuse. 2-amp slo-blow, I believe.

Good luck with that classic amp! :D

Thanks will do. I learned what they mean by microphonic today. I had put Baldwin labeled 12ax7 tubes in V2 and in V1. Wow I was getting all kind of strange tones. I tapped the tubes and it was like tapping a microphone. So I put back in the GT12ax7/7025s and problem gone. I just took one the Baldwin tubes and used it in and V4 and it sounds good. Think I will order some good 7025 tubes for V1 and V2 though. Maybe a pair of RCAs.
