A guy wants to trade his 1966 Fender Super Reverb for my Fender 52RI Telecaster Hot Rod. He says all original except caps and tubes. Looks in great condition. Still has the two prong cord as well. Here are some pics. Does this sound like a good trade and would I be gaining anything other than owning a piece of history. I already have a 71 Dual Showman Reverb. Your opinions would be great. Thanks

Look in very good shape , all new caps are top end parts.

Fair trade ? I don't know but I think I'll go for the Super Reverb If it sound good to your ears and if all transformers are originals .

We don't see them in the pictures

Amp appears to have been very well cared for and looks to be all original. The CTS Speakers are exceptionally good sounding, I have the same type in my '65 Super Reverb.

As for the trade I would. Vintage amps in this condition are not as plentiful as they used to be. Meanwhile you can get a good used '52 Tele Hot Rod pretty easy. $$ wise I think you would be coming out ahead...unless that Tele is your desert island guitar, then you might miss it and regret it. If not run don't walk to make the trade.

FWIW

Judging from the EIA codes stamped on the trannies, the amp is a *very early* '66 and still retains all of its sonically-critical Blue Molded tone caps and the OEM speakers. A re-issue Tele you can find anywhere......a piece of history like a '66 Super Reverb in near-pristine condition is a rarity which will only increase in value over the years.

Hi Arjay. Hope all is well. I was hoping you would jump in here as I know you know your stuff and always respect your opinion. I think I will go for it. I am going to audition it tomorrow but only have a 30 minute time frame to do it. Scheduling thing. Anyway other than playing both channels and giving it some volume is there anything I should listen for or look out for? Also he did mention a slight hum when plugged in to certain outlets and says it probably due to the two prong cord. Also he did have it recently checked out and the shop said all works as it should.

The filter and bypass caps are new so I would suspect any hum issues to be ground-related. Replacing the OEM power cord with a modern 3-conductor type (with a ground) will likely cure the problem. Personally, I prefer the industrial-grade replacement cables intended for power tools that are sold by most big-box hardware stores. Most are AWG16, 12 feet in length, and UL/CPSC certified. About fifteen bucks IIRC. Ditch the "death cap" while you're at it.

Will do Arjay. Question. He says its all original however that grill cloth sure looks good to be that old. If in fact the grill cloth has been changed out does that devalue the amp at all? Thanks

It is in fact repro cloth. But from what I can tell, whoever installed it knew what they were doing. I suppose you could argue the point for some negotiating advantage but at the end of the day, it's still a great amp that's worthy of ownership.

This is a true AB763 blackface Super Reverb. With single bias pot. All the bypass caps have been replaced, too. And the bias supply cap (at least what I can tell from the photo).

Great find! You are going to really love this amp.

PS: What are the tubes, which is in the amp? Looks like Tungsol (Russian) 6L6GC. Can't make out the rectifier.

Thanks!

I agree with the general consensus, go for it. The amp, will only continue to increase in value, the reissue....not so much.

Looking at that las pic right above, it looks like the resistors on the 6l6 tube sockets have seen better days. Might want to have those checked out.

Best of luck. :!:

Those screen grid resistors do look a bit "tired".

Thanks guys. I will definitely get those checked out this week. The amp was checked a few months ago the owner said and no problems found but I will have my tech check those resisters out and just go through everything.

Several posters have said such an amp "will only increase in value" - is that still true? I only ask because I have a '65 SR in similar condition, have owned it since '74. A number of years ago I saw the blackface amps were trending around $2,000, but lately the value seems to have dropped off. I think a number of factors are at play, and I think these big, heavy, loud amps are falling out of favor (despite the superior tone). I recently bought a Vox VT20, just because it was highly versatile, great sounding, and at a great price. And it's 30 watts vs. the SR's 40, so I could even use it for gigging (and it'll be a HECK of a lot easier to transport). So I'm curious if the blackface amps are still as sought-after and increasingly valuable?
