I am looking to rebuild my 1972 Fender Bassman 10... 50 watt tube combo.
What is the best material to replace the particle board on the cabinet face....and...what speakers do I need for that vintage sound.....also...wiring diagrams for the speakers (series or parallel )

Fender cabinets built after 1971 featured permanently-affixed baffle boards -- they are mounted via dados cut into the inner faces of the sides and bottom then glued. There's no practical way to remove a damaged baffle board without destroying the rest of the cabinet.

You'd be better off replacing the entire cabinet -- the Bassman Ten's chassis shares its dimensions with those of a Super Reverb and aftermarket enclosures for the SR are available from Mojotone, Rodgers Amps, and other companies. These repros are built to original pre-1970 specs with all-pine case construction, finger-joined corners, and a screw-in baffle board.

For vintage Fender tone using ten-inch speakers, I favor the alnico CTS driver as used with most original Super Reverbs. Other worthy candidates include Weber's 10A150, Kendricks Black Frame, or original Chicago-made Jensen C10Q's. A series-parallel wiring configuration may be necessary to ensure that your amp is driving the correct impedance load.

didit,

Retroverbial is your man. His knowledge of Fender amps, cabs, and skill in word work is beyond reproach.

Ok...got the baffle board out (particle board) without damaging the rest of the cabinet....any suggestions on what type of plywood to replace it with?

Half-inch void-free birch ply is the preferred material.

One question, didit, are you wanting to return this to bass guitar service or is it for six-string duty?

Really a little of both....I play an acoustic electric also.....plus just bought an American Standard jazz bass....I have a small 8×8 room in my basement where my guitars and amps ate set up. ..I'm not restoring the amp to mint cosmetically...kind of like the worn look...but I want it to sound good

Well in that case you most definitely want quality woofers with a wide range of response such as the Eminence B102's I already recommended. http://www.eminence.com/speakers/speaker-detail/?model=Legend_B102
Also take a close look at Eminence Basslite S2010 Neos. http://www.eminence.com/speakers/speaker-detail/?model=Basslite_S2010

The B102 *might* be acceptable as a "dual duty" speaker, but the Basslite will strangle the tone from a guitar due to its limited frequency bandwidth. It's been my experience that no single speaker can really perform both roles with any credibility.

Either choice is better by far than the original CTS woofs.

What about the Fender replacement speakers made by Eminence @ $109 each or the Celestion @ $60 each!.....just looking at what's available at Guitar Center that I have gift cards for

Those CTS "woofs" can be re-coned as outstanding guitar drivers.

I flogged mine to within an inch of their lives. I bought a brand new Fender Bassman 10 in 1977 when i got out of the Army. I had ordered a left-handed natural finish Precision with white neck in 1975. It arrived in 1976.

I loved the tone of that combo, but it just didn't have the volume I needed or the depth, but damn if it didn't have balls! I strung my P in GHS Bass Boomers and ran it wide open as was the rage at the time. I used an Electro-Harmonix LPB-1 for more gain and I sounded like a full Marshall Stack dimed. It recorded quite well, and I gained a well earned reputation as the most radical bass player in town.
