I came across this old Fender Vibroverb, I assume its a brown face, early 60's. But I'm having trouble dating it. Here is a link to the pics: http://imgur.com/a/RIY19

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Photos of the stamped serial number on the back. The numbers stamped on the trannies, pots, and speaker will help. Unfortunately, the date stamp on the tube chart has been removed.

Check the link, about 2/3rd the way down the page for Vibroverb S/N info.

Absent a legible date stamp on the tube chart, you'll have to extrapolate the amp's "birthday" using the EIA codes on the pots, trannies, and caps (speakers too but only if they are the original Oxfords). This method is less precise but will yield a six-to-eight week gestation window. These 6G16's are relatively rare, with some four hundred examples produced in 1963 only.

Thanks! Do you have recommended resource to look up those EIA codes? The speakers are not originals, but everything else seems factory

That is often true.

It does indeed give me my answer. The Serial number is 00405, which puts it right in the middle of 63. Thanks

They're very rare amps, likely built between February and June. In July the Vibroverb was totally revised to become the legendary AA763 circuit driving a single 15-inch speaker. Fullerton began shipping those to dealers in January of 1964.

I got the amp working, a transformer was out and I had to re-soldier a few wires.

The amp does not have the original speakers. In fact it has some pretty bad sounding speakers, some company called Pyle Driver. I'd like to get something close to the originals as possible.

Any suggestions?

One 15-inch speaker, correct? A re-coned JBL D130 would be nice.

If the amp has 2 X 10 inch speakers... CTS alnico or Jensen P10N.

that's funny, I found the same brand speakers in my vintage amp. As far as I knew, Pyle made speakers for use in hifi equipment such as car stereos.

At first I figured some dope installed his home stereo speakers to save a few dollars. But after a little research, it seems Pyle made some musical instrument speakers along the way. But yeah, they don't have any place in a vintage amp - on the plus side, you get to source and install the speakers of your choice! :)

Think Pyle bought Utah, who supplied several OEM speakers.

Coat the cones of those Pyle Drivers with high-temp appliance enamel and use them for ashtrays.

Seriously though, the best vintage speakers for that amp are hands-down a pair of Chicago-made Jensen's. They turn up frequently on Ebay and other sites -- you just need to search for them. With its 35-watt output, you could conceivably get away with the C10Q (a 25-watt driver) but for an added margin of safety, I would recommend the C10N (40 watts). If you lack the patience for such a quest, then Weber's 10F150 with *light* doping is the ticket.
