A pretty novice question. If I decide to keep my 1970 Twin Reverb, I'd like to know if I can play anything other than clean, maybe with some mods. The amp is getting Weber Chicago 12s in it which I believe is more "open" to overdrive. Basically I'm looking for a mild to moderate "classic rock" sound. Thanks.

No mods would help you make TR dirty, so buy yourself an OCD pedal and enjoy ..
TR is known for doing a great job with this pedal for sure. :D

Correct.

The Twin Reverb has always been touted as the "queen of clean" and there's not much to be done to the amp that will alter that. Your best bet is a few carefully selected stompboxes. Pedals that work well with this platform include the TS9 Tube Screamer, Pro Co's Rat, and Digitech's Bad Monkey. Fulltone's OCD (or one of the variants) is also useful as a clean boost, when all-out saturated OD and compression is too hot for a particular type of song.

An owner of a TRRI tried this... using 6P3S-E tubes. They are military spec 5881 types. So, should be biased to around 18 watt max, per tube (in Class AB1, push-pull --- like the TR). Really, sound better around 15-16 watts per tube. These tube have better midrange than current model 6L6GCs. Warmer tone.

Just a thought.

I'll look into some pedals, I guess I could "collect" whatever pedals I think I might want for a certain sound. This is still up in the air though as I am still leaning to sell this amp if it ever gets fixed up right. Thanks.

Pedals are a good way to go for overdrive tones. Even if you do find another amp that has a good overdrive, it's usually a "one trick pony". Pedals are a cheap way to expand your tone secection.

As for the Twin, upping the value of the V!a or V2a cathode resistor from 1.5K to 3.3K or 4.7K will give you a little dirt when you push it with high guitar volume.
You can make it switchable with a P-P switched volume control, but only if you're a heretic....Its a pretty collectable amp without mods.

Believe it or not, my favorite pedal for getting dirt out of a Twin Reverb has long been the Boss HM-2-I know, I know that favorite of '80's metal crunch hair bands. However, used as a boost with a low fuzz/low distortion setting gives a nice breakup way earlier than having to near dime a Twin. Tone monsters like David Gilmour and Jerry Garcia both included this one in their live rigs for several years.

The Boss will get you there, as will any number of other quality stompboxes.

When I was still playing out with Twin Reverbs I used my Zoom amp simulator. It worked quite well.

Its a OCD clone at its best ..
