I finally received my baffle from Weber. It came unpainted. I'm wondering what paint to use, if at all. It seems most baffles I have seen are almost like a translucent flat black; the grain of the wood can easily be seen. Obviously if I prime and paint it with Rustoleum it won't be as nice or correct. Thanks.

I use flat black , water base paint .

The grain you see on ( old ? ) baffle is because, imo , wood drink the paint after many years with only one coat.
There is no translucide flat black paint IMO.

On the Cab I built, I just used a rattle can of flat black auto primer (because it's what I had lying around). It's covered by grillcloth anyway so it doesn't have to look like a Jon Kosmoski paint job.

I used Birch ply for the baffle, so one coat was sufficient. If you are using Pine or standard ply, you might need a couple coats.

cheers!

Thanks !

A Car Buddy of mine has a custom commercial furniture business (Drs. Offices, conference rooms, reception areas, etc.) He has a 10,000 sq.ft. workshop with virtually every woodworking tool imaginable - Planers, Joiners, Routing Tables, Sanders, Saws, even a paint booth (for staining).

In exchange for showing him how to dial-in the Kuglefischer Fuel Injection on his '73 BMW 2002tii, he gave me full run of the place on a Saturday last month.

I wanted to closely duplicate an actual Fender Cabinet, so I chose 3/4" Pine and Baltic Birch ply (both of which he supplied). He suggested going with dovetail joints over finger-joining to give the cab better rigidity and resonance, so I did. I sized it to accept a 12" speaker, but also cut an additional baffle to accept a 10" if I choose later. It is also sized for a Champ chassis.

I got a '68 Jensen C12N, which needed a rebuild, on local CL for $10 and a local shop supplied me w/ a correct voice coil (for 3.6 Ω nominal) and cone. It was my 1st rebuild and I messed up the 1st cone, but after an extra $25 for a new cone, the 2nd came out great. I'm going to cover it in black tolex w/ blackface style grillcloth. I've hooked it into my '65 Vibro Champ (using just cheap zip cord) and it sounds amazing, especially for 5 Watts!

It's incredible to be able to work in a professional shop, the whole thing took me just under 2 hours to complete. I'll cover the cab and install the grillcloth next week once I'm back from NOLA.

The problem is, after I cost out the amp head, it's really close to just buying and using a Fender Vibro Champ chassis, so I may never complete the build and just slip in my '68 Drip Edge VC chassis instead, or keep an eye out for a salvage VC to rebuild.

cheers!

Beautiful work throughout -- very well detailed.

Dove-tails are inherently stronger than finger joints but ultimately I think such a process is "gilding the lily". Nice, but a bit of overkill. Like the $2055 toilet seat that Northrop installed in the B-2 stealth bomber.

That construction looks so nice it'd almost be a sin to cover it in Tolex. Perhaps a teak stain sealed with marine-grade urethane......

Rawk on!

Again Arjay, Thanks !

Agreed on the Dove-tailing, but his joiner was amazing, just clamp-in the piece, attach the correct knife (razor sharp), set the dimensions on the computer and hit start - easy-peasey.

Same with the quarter-rounding, the router table did it all, incl. feeding it.

The toughest part was the 12" cutout done by hand on a Plunge-router... if you look closely, you can see I didn't get it 100% balls-on accurate - slightly out-of-round from 9 o'clock to noon, but it'll be covered.

Steve chose a single 8' piece of clear pine for me from his lumber stock, even though I told him a few knots wouldn't matter as the cab would be covered, he insisted.

I thought about staining/sealing the cab since the wood is so well-grained and clear, but Tolex offers a little protection against bumps or scrapes, and I've already purchased it, so Tolex it is. Plus, I set the dimensions to account for the thickness of the Tolex and without it, there will be gaps along the baffle and rear braces.

cheers!

Quite a nice job of cabinet making there LMN! You are going to love the sound of the Vibrochamp through that C12N! It is going to sound huge! I have seen this done with an old Music Master Cab and the bigger cab really lets the Champ breath!

Nice documentation photos too! Got the popcorn ready for the rest of this one!

Let's see some more pics once both pieces are finished.
