Do you have the OEM tubes in it? After you have it a bit, you might want to throw in a nicer speaker. Jensen P8R or a nice Weber. There are lots of choices!

Congrats on a nice little porch weasel! Nothing like the tone of a cranked champ! If you do look to replace the speaker, might I suggest a Kendrick Blackframe 8. Tone is similar to a good vintage Jensen once break in has been achieved! I have one in my '68 and it has a nice sizzle to it!

I've heard Kendrick mentioned for replacement, some said Weber sounder dark or muffled, I would want a nice clean, not looking for early break up, all suggestions would be appreciated.

Correct.

The "023014" is FMI's in-house P/N for a Champ or Vibro Champ speaker. The goldish color is what gave me pause.

The Weber would be a worthy replacement but for a punchier tone, the Kendrick would be hard to beat.

Whatever your choice, be sure to specify a 4-ohm coil.

Thanks, yea, I expected the speaker to be silver, looking for a nice sparkling clean tone, as I would use OD to dirty. Clarify what you mean by punchier? just looked at Kendrick site, and am interested, and I will be sure to get 4 ohm.

The sizzle comes on about 8-10 on the volume dial on my champ...it is punchy but clean up to that point. Great highs and mids, bass is only good, but can't expect much better from an 8 inch speaker. I like the Kendrick better than the Weber, but the Kendrick costs a bit more.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, yes, it helps, if I change the speaker I want to get as much as I can out of a 8" speaker, cost is not really an issue as I expect to pay $80 or $90 bucks, as cheap as this was, I dont mind putting a few bucks into it, it's a cool little amp. I was going to spend $$$ on a new point to point small amp, instead this was a steal!

An accurate assessment.

The Kendrick seems to maintain its articulation well into the onset of amp compression and OD while the Weber saturates more quickly and the tone becomes somewhat muddy. I think it's due to the difference in magnet composition between the two drivers.

Nice Find !

The Champs / Vibro Champs are great !!

Yours looks fairly unmolested.

I picked up a pair of Vibro Champs this past winter and love them !

1965 Blackface Vibro Champ:

1968 Silverface Drip-Edge Vibro Champ:

Did the 3-prong conversion on both, swapped out the Cap Cans and re-tubed from my vintage tube stock. Added a date-correct Jensen to the Blackface... much better than the Oxford in the '68.

Picked them up for silly money and will eventually sell off one of them. :D

cheers!

Nice! those are really clean! mines pretty rough, and smells bad too! noticed my tube sockets are kind of loose, the 5y3 and 6v6 wiggle very easy, other than a speaker change and tube swap, the 76' already came with a 3 prong cord, what if anything do you guys recomend as far as service for a 30+ year amp?

New cap can, inspect (and replace if needed) the power-rail resistors, re-tension the tube sockets, clean the pots and jacks, and check the line fuse for proper rating. Absent any overt symptoms of malfunction, that should cover it.
